In the last week before the playoffs, have 7 and 8 get a bye while 9, 10, 11, and 12 play to get to them.

A tournament full of garbage teams to get into the playoffs to get beat down the following week

Sounds great

But I think the second one is an absolutely awful idea. Especially when you've already played 82 games to determine hierarchy.
On top of that, what are the other teams doing in the meantime?

I disagree. It sounds a lot like the wild card play in game in MLB, and that hasn't fundamentally changed much about the game.

If it's a 4 team play in with the 7, 8, 9 and 10 seeds in a two round, single elimination tournament, that could be fun to watch.

Also, it keeps more teams alive for longer, which cuts down on teams giving up at the end of the season when they're out of striking distance of the 8 seed. Now, if they're in striking distance of the 10, they still have a reason to play hard every night.

All in all, not the worst idea I've heard.

I see this as a possible positive showing which teams could be on the rise and how younger players could advance their game getting a similar taste of postseason action. I also see it as a problem when stars don't want to play because they are on the end of contracts and don't want to risk injury. I think it would be good for the fans but I see a lot of controversy and drama considering its the NBA.

European soccer model

The reason that works in Europe is that there are literally hundreds of teams across the continent, and just about all of them are eligible for the big Champions League-ish tournaments. The concept would be incredibly shitty with only 30 teams who already play each other pretty often.

Say you add one tournament, that's at least another 10-20 games for the winning team (depending on format.) You already have players "managing loads", how the hell would this help at all?

A “cup” tournament would be nowhere near 10-20 games. If they’re going to do that, they should have the g league teams as well playing in the early rounds to get into the tournament with the nba teams. Would be fun having the lakers or Celtics in some tiny g league arena.

They’d almost have to cut some regular season games to accommodate this tournament though due to the relatively small roster sizes.

Who gives a frick about having the best team win. Have a tournament style playoffs and everyone will tune in.

Fall Regular Season, Fall Tournament.
Spring Regular Season, Spring Tournament

My post from the pels board topic on this yesterday.

quote:

I’d be for something like the FA cup in England. Have a tournament between all 30 teams that plays out over the course of a couple months. Have some sort of bye system in place for the previous years playoffs first round winners/second round winners/etc.

Have a random draw each round with home team being random as well. Maybe even go with a 2 game aggregate for the semi finals. Winner gets an automatic berth into the playoffs to make the title worth something more than a trophy.

ETA: maybe make the guaranteed playoff spot at stake the 8 seed that way if a team like the warriors win the tournament there's still incentive for them to play out the season instead of resting starters.

Bill Simmons suggested the Entertaining As Hell tournament to determine the 8 seed and the midseason basketball classic like 10 years ago.

I actually like this idea assuming the draft will be expanding and a true minor league is becoming a thing. An entertaining way for younger developing talent to get more PT on a bigger stage, and you might be able to put some bench guys in roles they wouldn’t normally play as primary ball handlers or scorers etc to see what they can do.

Adam Silver...he is quite possibly the most over rated and overly thought of commissioner, possibly ever. He is a total pushover. The players know it and that's why they love him, because he bends the knee to them time and time again

It amazes me that no one else has noticed this.

Playoffs are too long already. Don’t want.

I’d like a tournament to kick off the season. Have a weekend tournament in Vegas with the eight teams that just missed the playoffs. It could give teams more incentive not to tank.

Yeah, learn from Europe.

They're doing so well now in life.

Silver has been a wimp since the day he took over.

I would rather that with back-ups playing than an all-star game.

If they're serious about a tournament over All-Star weekend, I'd think about this:

G League players don't make a ton of $ and every team except the Nugs, Pels and Blazers has an affiliate.

Let the G league teams play a single elimination tourney during ASG weekend with a million to each member of the winning team and zilch to everyone else. You'd get some exposure for the minor leagues and some competitive games with meaning.

meh. History has shown that you have to adapt. That's how businesses work.
