Correct, the game was totally changed and the *new* stolen base stats should be marked with the *

Gotcha, so you have no idea how many bases Acuna stole on first pitch, just confirming. Thanks.

It doesn’t matter. When the pitcher knows they have a limited number of pick off attempts, stealing on the 1st pitch is stil far easier than it’s ever been

I agree with your points but this year is the most I’ve watched baseball in a long time because of the shorter games. Best change they’ve made in years.

Successful stolen bases as a percent of attempts is at a record high across the MLB this season, not very hard to figure out

Go look at the guy I pointed out in the post you responded to before saying something

The only good rule the MLB made is enforcing a pitch clock.

DH in NL sucks
No shifting sucks
Extra innings base runners suck
Minimum pickoff attempts suck

I’ve watched less baseball this year than ever. Not the game I grew up with

I'd also throw in the "ghost runner" rule as diminishing the game.

The rule still changes the situation and how people react to it. Pitchers don't want to hit the limit because then its a free-for-all, runners know that and they are more likely to run earlier because the pitcher is less likely to throw over.

If you throw over not only are you using your attempts for that PA, but there is also a chance of a bad throw or catch and the runner advances anyway.

I think we see a lot of steals for a while, and catcher development switches from framing (since a robo-strike zone at some point looks likely anyway) back to the traditional blocking and controlling runners like we used to see.

It's not gonna matter b/c Acuña is the unquestioned MVP.

MLB has made drastic rule changes before. So should Gibson's ERA record have an asterisk since the mound wasn't lowered yet?

How many of his steals came after the pitcher ran out of pickoff attempts?
That’s a simplistic way to look at it. When pitchers know they’re limited, they won’t throw over when they otherwise would have. This rule definitely changes the base stealing dynamic.

And as for the OP saying bigger bases aren’t a big deal, I disagree. Each base is a bit bigger. This allows runners to take a slightly bigger lead and also allows them to get to second slightly faster.

It may not seem like a big deal, but those inches are often the difference between being safe or tagged out.

I don't disagree.

It's like now the passing yard and completion % records being set in the NFL these days.
