Willis retiring after some injuries and the money he made is smart and makes sense. This Borland guy is just an idiot. He made barely anything and didn't have any significant injuries, at least make it to your second contract.

Yeah I know it's just so absurd. The guy spent his whole life developing and training for pro football and instead of maybe playing a couple of seasons or getting to his second contract he retires for fear of injury.
I feel like he was a bit presumptive.

Or maybe he knows that he can use his mind to make a lot of money without risking his long term health. Crazy, I know.

All these message board badasses calling him a puss. I bet they were just some trains on the football field in their prime, right? If only coach had played them in the championship game! They could have been great!

I agree. From what I've read, he's a smart dude. With a million dollar head start, a good mind and a recognizable name, he can make some scratch without fricking his body up.

Wisconsin has some rich alumni. He'll be taken care of with a nice cushy 6 figure job.

And Ricky Jackson had to get Tom Benson to buy his plane ticket to afford to go to his own NFL Hall of Fame induction.
Perspective can be a funny thing.

$1,037,436: Amount that Chris Borland made in his NFL career.
That's a nice pay-day for a 24-year-old. He was also a bright student that received his undergraduate degree and plans to go back to school. He will be fine.

He didn't have any publicized head injuries, but his retirement had to do with risk more than retiring from a specific injury.
Speaking of injuries, he had a very, very significant shoulder injury early in college. He struggled with it his entire college career and one NFL team even took him off their board completely as his shoulder never actually checked out. It was well-documented here in Madison that the guy was essentially playing on one arm most of his senior season.

Why won't Borland run the risk of injuring himself for my entertainment?! Ugh! I'm so upset!!!1!!

Smart kid. His contract situation was posted earlier. He probably looked at the odds he would even make it to the second contract and, given his prior shoulder issues, calculated he wouldn't even make it to contract #2. Made the decision to hang it up now while in good health that much easier.

This guy could get a book deal and a shitload of speaker fees if he is halfway coherent.

Borland still on his rookie deal.
I realize the collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA set the limits on rookie contracts and salary caps. I just think it is irrational that the allocation of salary cap money arbitrarily punishes inexperienced players. The NFL is supposed to be a meritocracy, not something that rewards seniority.

ok well it may be an issue, but its wrong to compare him to Galette. Compare what Borland would have gotten on a 2nd deal and then you might be able to draw a comparison.
Galette was undrafted, im sure he didnt make as much as Borland has in his first year.

For every "win" on the owners side there are equal players getting paid who aren't worth their draft status. It goes both ways. Teams are also taking a risk on that player.

The blanket phrase "fear of injury" is so stupid. The dude isn't afraid of pain, he's afraid of fricking up his brain, that thing that determines the essence of who you are. Can we please differentiate brain injury from other bodily injuries? A torn ACL can be fixed, there's no cute for a brain injury...
