only AD has close to the potential this guy had
he was bigger than AD and looked to be just as fast

He really didn't seem to care about being great, or even like football that much. As one of the guys said at the end, "He could have been as good as he wanted to be." I think he was, he just didn't want it. Fortunately for him, he seems content.
I think he was doing more for his brother, he did not seem like he was in love with football and all of the work that goes with it.

but there are literally millions of similar sad stories which happen every year.
a. there aren't millions of similar stories, b/c there aren't millions with his potential
b. every year?

i just dont like the story that much. yeah he was supposed to be amazing, but he wasnt bc he didnt want it, because he was missing something.
there are plenty of guys who are missing a pretty big aspect of the game that prevents them from becoming the GOAT. this guy seems no different.

i'm not accusing you of this solely, but comments lke this are likely going to be made by tons of people who were the hard workers who were always jealous of being benched for the lazier/more talented

i didnt even watch it.
and your post literally makes almost no sense. im saying im not that into the story bc this guy was supposed to be awesome but wasnt. he literally didnt have what it took to be great.
if i was 6'4 and ran a 4.4, id be a division one college athlete. well im not, im missing something. and im not great because of it.
that's somewhat of a reach, but i can't think of a better example within two minutes.

Are they going to replay it tonight?
Posted on 11/9/10 at 10:36 pm to TigerNlc
The next replay is Thursday at 11pm on ESPN2

It's a big deal because Marcus Dupree in the early 80's was a bigger deal than Lebron James was coming out of high school. Legendary writer Willie Morris wrote a book on this kids recruitment. He could have played in the NFL right out of high school, name another player that could have done that? An Ole Miss coach at the time said it would have taken $100,000-$150,000 to get him to sign. That was in 1980!
In short, he was the most highly sought after prospect of all time, in any sport in America.

I was wondering about that. I think it was Akers or Switzer who said that Campbell and Dupree were the only guys who could make that jump. It seems that Adrian Peterson maybe could have too. All three of those guys had the bodies of 25-year-olds at 18.

that was one of if not the best 30 for 30....
Yeah...That might be the best one yet, and that is really saying something. I finished it about 15 minutes ago and I still have goosebumps. I have a lot of respect for that guy, and even Switzer for admitting he handled the situation wrong.
So many things about this documentary were eye-opening. The recruiting wars, his pretty amazing comeback, and the fact that they got the rev. to even go on camera and be a part of this. I was blown away.

I watched it with my boys. It was really good. I remember when all this happened. I lived in South Mississippi and everyone was so excited that he was coming to USM. Then, he didn't play and shows up with the Breakers.
It was a really sad story. But, very, very good.

The craziest thing was him working out in that room with the heaters on for 3 months straight and getting back in shape...dropped 100 lbs. P90x don't have anything on that.

Also add in the fact not many people get people like Billy Sims and Earl Campbell flying on private planes into their small town during recruiting wars to get them to go to their school.

It seems that Adrian Peterson maybe could have too.
If you remember, Peterson explored skipping college and going to the NFL by riding the coattails of Clarrett, who at the time was suing the NFL to become eligible after his freshman year.
I distinctly remember Peterson saying that he thought he could play in the NFL out of highschool and that he was faster than anyone on the Cowboys roster. I rolled my eyes...then I saw him skulldrag UT 6 months later and realized he was probably correct.

Dupree rumbled like a tank and glided like a gazelle. Unreal combo of size, speed and agility.
He ran so effortlessly that it appeared he wasn't running hard, but he was outrunning cornerbacks to the house. Unreal natural talent.
