i just don't see the hype or purpose. maybe if i followed his recruitement and lived in miss or was a sooner fan in the early 80's i'd get it. we always hear stories about these 'freak" athletes who would've been the GOAT or could've been the GOAT if ____ didn't happen, or if ____ didn't occur. I guess I just don't see the point besides being a sad story, but there are literally millions of similar sad stories which happen every year.

There's not many guys that have ever had the type of freshman season he did and then have such a bizarre set of circumstance thereafter.

I can remember back in the late 80's people area LA saying the same sort of stuff about Germaine "The Juice" Williams from Ascension Catholic. I believe he still has the record for most yards in hs.

One guy who comes to my mind who could have been great was Cecil "the diesel" Collins

And how many of us had life-changing decisions to make at age 18 with literally NOBODY looking out for our best interests?

Really sad. I'd have liked to think that the Breakers accountants or front office would have tried to look out for Marcus a little more than they obviously did.

I think the NFL would have been better equipped to protect him from this kind of scam but then again maybe back in 1984/85 not even the NFL would have been equipped to protect him.

I feel like when I'm interested in watching a story on 30 for 30, greatness ensues. I thought the Escobar looked promising, the Vlade Divac one, and now this one. 3 for 3

Switzer is a fricking moron.

Switz was pretty tough.. but like his uncle said.. some guys you can't just dog.. cuz they don't respond to it.. Obviously, Dupree was the kind of kid that just needed to be encouraged and he goes out and produces.. but definitely not pushed. It's not like he was some cocky, big-headed dude that needed it. He was pretty humble.

I think Switz truly does regret how he handled him.

Ken Fairly=Cecil Newton

What a great documentary. The things that resonated with me was how ill eqipped he was to deal with his fame and opportunities due to his upbringing and family situation. The kide was famous from 9th grade on.

He also had to be the father in his house for his lil brother who he deeply loves. That love for reggie really shined through.

I admire the hell out of him for missing 4 years and being out of football and then losing 100 lbs in 3 months. He looked shredded in his come back

Switzer said in the doc that the way he handled Dupree was his biggest regret. Switzer knows he fricked that one up.

What's strange is that Dupree looks back and knows it was a mistake to leave ou too. It's just like his talent at that time was just totally wasted.

Pretty cool doc. Really makes you wonder. Dupree was a good guy man.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he regrets it because it cost Switzer, not because it cost Dupree... Just looked it up. The leading OU rusher in 1984 was some no name with 688 yards and they lost to a shitty Kansas team, tied Texas, and lost by 11 in the Orange Bowl to Washington... So yeah, having Dupree might have won him a National Championship.

It appears, by the doc, that MD was brainwashed by the Rev. MD appeared to have been through so much that he didn't give a frick any longer and just enjoyed getting by.

great episode

He really didn't seem to care about being great, or even like football that much. As one of the guys said at the end, "He could have been as good as he wanted to be." I think he was, he just didn't want it. Fortunately for him, he seems content.
