Mardi gras was early last year.

Max is so freaking good it is fun to watch him. I want to see a 3 to 4 driver race for the championship

I still don't get why red bull has a Jr Team. I hope Yuki makes some noise this year. Same with Williams

Hamilton with a new guy in his ear is going to entertaining

Just to compare, this thread is currently at page 34

- The 2024 thread reached page 34 on Feb 28 last year, more than 2 weeks earlier than this year.

- The 2024 thread reached page 52 the evening after the first race of the season.

It's shite to have to scroll down to the bottom to see a thread. Like I said, un-sticky and let it rise and fall based off post frequency.

In fairness I think a lot of those posts were someone finding the thread down a few pages and posting something just to bring it back to page 1.

The FIA have released a statement confirming that a "tougher" new rear wing deflection test will be introduced from the Chinese Grand Prix onwards, a decision taken following the season-opening race in Australia over the weekend.

After teams were requested to use cameras to monitor the on-track deformations of their cars during the practice sessions in Melbourne, the FIA analysed this footage and concluded that sufficient grounds exist for a “tougher test” to be introduced on the upper rear wing at the next event in Shanghai, though it was added that all cars that raced in Australia were deemed to be legal.

I think it's how much flex the wings have under load.

And Lewis moving to Ferrari is enormous news to start the season.

Certain parts of the car are allowed to bend only so much before they're illegal. To test this particular case, they have a calibrated weight that they hang from the back wing and then they measure the deflection.

It makes sense for front wings where you can clearly see the bending and it allows them to provide more angle at slower speeds and less drag at faster speeds.

I have not seen such behavior from rear wings. It seems that they are fairly rigid and that makes sense because otherwise DRS could be less reliable. Moving parts that are bending at high speeds just screams for something to get stuck.

Great race. Although Sainz crashing under safety car was a big bummer. Glad Albon killed it. Going to be fun rooting for Williams this year, hopefully they can be consistently in the points.

The actuators are more than powerful enough to handle a little deflection, we are talking mm here. The rear wing is the draggiest part of the car, its the most bang for your buck as far as getting higher top end speed.

I seem to remember this complaint about McLaren last year? The deflection was creating a mini-DRS IIRC.

This seems to be the picture that has stirred this back up. The back half of the rear wing flexes causing a slight opening between the two pieces which alleviates down force.

Actually McLaren pushed the boundaries of this exact rule just last year where they allowed the top portion of the wing to flex down just a little making for a sort of mini-DRS. The FIA deemed the wing legal but after many complaints McLaren stopped using it, or were forced to stop using it. They first deployed it I believe in Baku and Charles couldn't get around Piastri even though he had DRS and Piastri did not.

Interesting. For some reason I thought McLaren's issue last year was with the front wing.
