our plant manager here (engineering background) usually walks around in slacks with a button down, usually without tie, sometimes with. if there are meetings he will throw on a jacket.

My brother went to an interview in Charleston,SC for a Steel Plant. He wore a coat and tie. They laughed hard at him and threw jibs such as "You interviewing for sales?" and such. Guy that wore his boots ended up landing a 70k/yr position. My brother ended up getting hired but for a lesser salary.

I've never seen anyone with a suit and tie on in a plant. Admin office or elsewhere.

Call the plant and ask the person who answers the phone, what is the appropriate attire for an interview at this plant. Ask them what the managers wear to work every day, then dress a little bit above that.
...or you can wear a suit and tie and when you arrive you can ask the secretary these questions. You could tell him/her you'll be right back and ditch the coat and tie if it seems too much.

I offer this advice as an engineer and a plant manager;

D-O N-O-T wear a suit and tie to an interview being conducted at the plant.

no that is fricking stupid. would you hire someone to a managerial position that has to call and ask what to wear to an interview? thats a far worse idea than just wearing the suit.
