A vacation shouldn't cause you go into debt.

A new survey shows that almost half of parents are going into debt during a Disney vacation.
Conducted by LendingTree, the survey published this week found that 24% of all Disney-goers have accrued debt during their trips, along with 45% of parents with children under the age of 18. The average amount of debt for those parents was $1,983, LendingTree said.

Concessions were the biggest driver of excessive spending, with 65% of respondents citing the high cost of food and beverages. Additionally, 48% of respondents said that they had not budgeted enough for transportation, and 47% cited accommodations.

LendingTree found that a stay at a Disney World resort hotel for two adults and two children could range as high as $1,079 a night – the biggest cause of debt.

And this is why poor people are poor.
Spending money they don’t have on things they don’t need.

That number is in no way accurate.
For a family of 4 and 5 days at disney, you're easily 5k+ in... Rough estimates
Flights: 2k round trip
Lodging: 1500
Tickets: 2k
Dining: 1k
Merch: 500
The fact that something like 60% of Americans don't have enough in savings to cover an emergency expense of 1k, the numbers just don't add up to it only being 45% taking on debt.

This is what’s wrong with America. Most Americans are in so much debt. And I freak out when I don’t have access to a liquid 10k in my savings not accounting for cds and investment accounts. 10k will get me through almost anything

I'm in no way struggling and have taken trips to Orlando, mainly for Universal, and will go back soon... I have tons of air miles, hotel points, etc. and I always leave thinking "how they hell do 90% of the people I saw afford this shite".

Taking on debt for a vacation is all kinds of stupid

Regrets are few because they are short-sighted.

Maybe they'll regret it when they have to file bankruptcy?
Probably not.

Disney credit card you can do 6 months no interest and you can pay on it in advance for a year or more with no interest. So there is little excuse to “go in debt” for Disney. Not many vacations allow you to book that far in advance for only 200$ down.

Just googled, Points Guy did a breakdown… this is for 3 day/nights with only 2 days at parks and no flights.
So using his calculations, you are talking 6k for a family of four to do Disney for 5 days without flights.
quote:
For four people (two adults, one teenager and one kid) spending three nights and three days at Disney World — with one of those being a non-park day — the total cost came to $3,662.94. That breaks down to $915.74 per person for the trip, which is the equivalent of spending $305.25 per person per day.

During my entire childhood the only vacations we did was weekends in Biloxi and went to the Pigeon Forge once. Don’t feel like we missed out by not taking $5k vacations. But i was never into Disney as a kid either
More power to those who have the bread though

We went to Houston most years to Astroworld and caught an Astros game or two. That was our vacation most of the time.

A big chunk of that 60% includes people who are, in no way, taking a trip to Disney. The 45% sounds about right since the only people who SHOULD vacation at Disney (based on price) are people who are middle class or higher.

Memories are worth the financial strain. News at 7.
Look, I’m all for financial responsibility but kids have a pretty short window when Disney is magical and creates lifelong family memories. I am not surprised at all that most would see spending $5K+ on that trip is worth it.

This is why Dave Ramsey is actually a GOOD thing for the average American.
