If I somehow end up on CNBC, something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Well, they have not found a permanent replacement for Mark Haines yet, so........

Lacking any kind of brand name degree, I think the CFA progression gives people comfort knowing that I know more than just straight financial accounting. In the case of this particular IB, nearly every one has either a UT MBA, the CFA, or a CPA, or some combination of all three.

I would say pursuing and attaining the CFA is a mark of serious dedication in addition to someone possessing a quality mind. If I had a hundy for everyone over the years that told me they were going to earn a CFA and didn't I would be ultra wealthy. Well, it would put a lot of dinero in my pocket. Hope you passed LII.

That laptop sounds like it needs some serious help.

ETA: Try the Yeti Espresso stout, that is awesome. I picked up the Yeti Belgian but have not tried it. Had a Southern Tier mokah last night, excellent, but a 22 oz bomber is way more than 1 person needs, 11.2% ABV.

Did you ever think of obtaining an MSF for better direct networking opportunities?

Me too brah. 4/4 on the CPA and 3/3 on the CFA and to complete both in the span of 3 years would be nice. Its going to 3 more years to get the experience though, so I would really like to be able to put CFA on a business card before I'm 30.

Hard core for sure, makes my brain bleed just thinking about the months/years of hell involved.

I'd just like to point out that Alejandro was banned for tsunami jokes during the Japan/USA women's soccer match.

Well since you decided to throw out the "if only you were in that position line." I was laid off on June 30th because of a lack of business. I worked in a local accounting firm in a niche business line that did not grow for the firm over the past year, and as such they decided to let me go (which I am totally fine with). Being laid off is an ego blow regardless of the reasoning, and although my intent was to move on relatively soon, I enjoyed working there and would have preferred leave on my own terms, and I consider myself to be a devoted, capable, hard worker, always trying to maintain a professional attitude wherever I might be. I have approximately a year and a half truly useful working experience.

Approximately three weeks later (this week), I got an internship in a different city, at a bigger and larger company directly related to what I want to do, in as competitive a field as there is (investment banking) working with a bunch of people from much more accomplished academic and professional backgrounds than myself or anyone at my prior employer. Assuming I can do the job, this will likely lead to a full-time offer in September. It will also result in an approximate 100% pay raise, possibly more if you factor in a non-negligible bonus.

I also managed to get interviews lined up in the next month at the second largest energy company in the country, for two different positions (also likely 100% pay raise from prior job), as well as one and potentially two IBs in NYC, one of them being a bulge bracket. I'm not even counting the other firm, also a BB, that I already had interviewed with, which expressed a strong desire to give me an opportunity if it comes up, because they are in a hiring freeze. I did, however, contact them anyway. Let me reiterate that I have under two years of real working experience, which is only indirectly related to this field. I didn't get this opportunity because I have outstanding qualifications, I got this opportunity because I hustled for it.

I was laid off at about 3 PM on June 30th, I started calling people on June 31st at 8 AM. (eta: The key to this story is being able to create a day which does not exist, such as June 31st, as it gives you additional time. Highly encouraged.) Not because I needed money, I have 3 months of living expenses, but because I knew no one was going to come looking for me. I have a list of people that are all accomplished professionals that I have networked with throughout my life, all of which know me well enough to vouch for me on a personal basis, which is overwhelmingly the most important thing in finding entry-level jobs. If you hustle and generally present yourself as an intelligent and good person, most people are kind-hearted and will often go out of their way to try and help you out.

I purposefully keep my commentary on here as non-personal as I can, which is why I so adamantly hate when poliboard stuff leaks over here, regardless of the necessity of it to a particular discussion. If you treat TD like a sewer for all of your personal feelings, that's perfectly fine, but to then expect people to not react or want to step out for someone they've never met is absolutely unrealistic, unreasonable, jaded, and incredibly selfish. As if it were okay if you just said the same type of stuff while sitting around a table with people who you might otherwise ask for professional help. This is 2011, what you write on the internet matters. Period.

Damn. Just read this entire thread. This is the most drama the money talk has seen since the days of Rivers.

fizz, major props man. Kill it.

And I can vouch for a lot of what you've said about 'hustling.' My credentials aren't exactly perfect for the job I'll soon be starting. But when you're on the other side of the desk from the man who's about to invest in you for employment, there are a whole hell of a lot of factors which come into play above and beyond just what's printed on that resume.

You'll do great with your internship. Congrats.

I know this doesn't relate to the money talk, but I figured some people on here would at least get a laugh at this.

I think a major advantage of our generation is that we will be less likely to take jobs for granted since they have been so hard to come by for the majority of us.

Just saw this post got bumped a bunch. I haven't read it for over a week.

No I didn't go to SLU, I went to LSU undergrad and got my MBA from Loyola.

I explained on here already why I can't find work - like Kfizzle I too would have been hired at least 2 or 3 times by now if not for the non-compete. And yes, I understand that a non-compete is hardly legally binding, but the simple fact is that no company in a niche industry wants the headache of dealing with threatening legalize from a former employer.

At any rate I have a few things cooking again and I should have mentioned that Mononucleosis has kicked my arse for over 2 months which had a TON to do why I wasnt working my leads for quite a while. Now I'm getting closer to full strength and I'm making things happen again.

I will also say that I'm NOT a dickhead in real life, and I don't care what anybody says - an internet message board isn't real life. I think people who are bombastic and hyperbolic online are hilarious and if you disagree and want to carry that over into real life if you've never met me, than I guess that's your right and a risk that I'm willing to take.

I also want to point out what a huge dork Carlsoda is for A) having so little of a real life that he not only REMEMBERS a random message board post from over a year ago but that he also B) was able to apply it to an online personna whom he's never and will never meet.

I may have been unemployed for 7 months but I will never be that big of a loser.
