I am obviously so far away from billion dollar deals in NYC its not even funny. But I'm not sitting on my arse waiting for someone to ask me if I want to do it either. And I'm not going to stop doing what I've been doing for the last 3 or 4 years just because I've finally managed to work my way into a position that I have wanted.

If you can keep that attitude (and not let work burn you out along the way) there is no upper limit to your professional future.

Might I suggest you keep a sort of diary that you can look back upon to recall your advancements and what you learned along the way and maybe one day even write a book about your experiences?

Hell, that sure worked out BIG for Michael Lewis!

Just remember in your diary, June 31st is more commonly known as July 1.....

(edited to correct a misspelled word)

I didn't realize you had been laid off. But less than three weeks unemployed is incredibly impressive. That's some stone cold hustlin

I could've done it a week if I wanted to stay in public accounting, but I decided this was a chance to go ahead and shoot for the moon first.

I just want to say that after reading Kfizzle's post from yesterday, I texted a guy that I needed to talk to and then reworked another email. I've been networking like crazy this summer and he still made me feel bad.

Alejandro: did you go to SLU?

I don't mean that as an insult, either. I'm completely serious.

Well, other than that, all I've done is read, run, drink, and sit on my porch and cook.

Congrats on your new gig, man. You have any of those beers left you posted in that pic?

I am interested to know how much, if any, your CFA progression helped obtaining your new gig and other interviews?

And to think, we knew him back when he was a destitute college student to the point where he had duct tape (or clamps, I forget which) holding his computer screen together.

Beers didn't make it past that weekend, although I did pick up a 6 of sierra nevada summer and rogue mocha porter the other day, along with two bottles of Chianti.

I think in my particular case, it helped a good bit. Lacking any kind of brand name degree, I think the CFA progression gives people comfort knowing that I know more than just straight financial accounting. In the case of this particular IB, nearly every one has either a UT MBA, the CFA, or a CPA, or some combination of all three. I think other CPAs appreciate other CPAs, and I think other CFAs appreciate other CFAs. But, the reason I got the opportunity is because I managed to connect with someone. Its also probably almost certainly the reason I have to go to Houston in the first place, because I don't know any one that high up at any of the firms in nola, none of which gave me any consideration whatsoever. That's okay with me though, because when I come back in 3-5 years, they're going to be paying me a lot more than they would have otherwise.

Its just plugged in straight to the router now, so its more like a server than a laptop. I have to use remote desktop to do anything on it now, the screen is completely toast, clamp or no clamp.
