BTW I have known dumb kids those that just failed at life in all schools..

Paying any amount of money does not solve this problem.. Only strong parental involvment can.

And that fails then I guess the kid may just be a moron.

yea the schools system in BR is MUCH better than that of Zachary, Central or Livingston parish..

Its definitly a wiser investment to buy a 149K home in BR and pay another say 60K per kid on schools to get basically the same education they could otherwise get for free. Not to mention 149 in the surrounding parishes will get you a much nicer home.

I never said BR's public school system is better than any of those. I have no reason to say that, because it's not true. We have our children in private school here in BR. And the education they are getting is better, on average, than the education they would get in any of those systems. And I say this as a graduate of Zachary HS 20+ years ago.

We are very happy in our 40-year old neighborhood in Baton Rouge. Houses are well-maintained, crime is low, and it is easy to get anywhere in BR we want to get to. Prior to living here, we lived on the edge of the garden district. We were safe there, too.

As to a "nicer" house? I guess that depends on what you mean by nice. We aren't in the 149K range in our neighborhood, but we're not that far away. Our house is 2600 square ft. with a large yard. We have a neighborhood pool and park. Active voluntary neighborhood association. Even in the past 6 months-1 year, our property values have held steady or risen. I'll take my little bit more than 149K house that is convenient, safe, and in a location i actually want to live in over a similarly priced home that is not as convenient and isn't in a place I want to live.

Not really. With the widening projects set to be completed in 2-3 years, there will certainly be an ease in traffic. That is until the growth of those areas catches back up to the traffic demand. Its just a cycle.

That's my point. The only way it doesn't catch up, and traffic is better, is if 1) you get some crazy mass transit project, or 2) the population decreases, which obviously does not bode well for the area in general. Traffic is a perpetual problem everywhere, to think it will honestly be better at any time in the future is hilarious to me, except for maybe Detroit. Maybe.

Uhh not really. There are plenty of nice, upscale neighborhoods close to downtown Houston. And several very good public schools close to downtown as well. Can't say the same for BR.
A few years you could have said the same for HOUTX. The Heights is now one of the trendiest places in Houston. Ten years ago it was crime-ridden ghetto. People used to look at me like I was crazy for living there because of the preception of crime. Everyone wanted to live in Katy, Spring, or Sugarland. (Sound familiar)

Now the Heights is cleaned up. It's trendy (bleeccch). Everyone's tired of the commutes and incovience of the 'burbs. And folks how I can afford to live there. I sure do miss the freaks and musicians for neighbors better than the yuppies.

Or you can just stay out of the entire area if it doesn't offer what you desire

I grew up in Sherwood Forest, did the Catholic School thing at STM, moved out to the Highland area and did the Catholic Highschool thing as well.

Nevertheless, I really don't have aspirations to come back to BR after seeing 50-100 different cities throughout the country over the years. Preferably, I'll find a safe, nice place with good schools when the time comes. I don't think that is really expecting too much.

I'm in college right now and there is almost zero chance I stay in Memphis when I am out.

Nonetheless, if I wanted to live out in Germantown or Collierville then I would have exactly what I described. But I think they will be out of my price range when I begin my career.

wow, I had people tell me the same thing when I bought in Capital Heights a year ago. These were suburbanites on the East side of town who hadn't set foot in the area in 10 years and had no f'ing clue what they were talking about. It is so dangerous in Capital Heights as people are walking, running, and biking up and down the streets. Last night I saw 3 people out walking their dogs at 10pm, and it must have been a good night, because I didn't see any of them get murdered.

Well people that move to places like Livingston Parish from Baton Rouge are often dumbasses willing to wait in one hour traffic due to what they "heard"

I know people that live there and 'petty' theft is pretty rampant. If you leave a bike, lawnmower, 4 wheeler etc unattended for any length of time it probably won't be there when you return. Even if your property is chained up, it will be stolen. If your stuff isn't indoors, it's open season. That doesn't sound like any place I want to live. And this isn't 10 years ago, it was within the last month.

i would imagine that if you left these things out for an extended amount of time, they would be stolen just about anywhere.

It must depend on what part of Capital Heights they live in - I know several people personally who live there & leave stuff out all the time! No theft. It seems that area is improving over time.
