Do you, personally, know for a fact that this money is coming, or has actually been judged by external authorities to be owed to her?

Just be glad it isn't American Express. Those people do not play with poor people or people who can't pay on time.
Source: I was 90 days late once 9 years ago for $3K and they about tried to ruin me.
American Express does not sell debt. They ruin your life.
It took me 9 years to get back in good enough standing with them after paying the debt. Never, ever again.

I think it’s Cap One suing.
I’m surprised as well. I think it’s because she stopped communicating with them.
She can’t pay the one time amount as it sits now.
As others have said, once the attorneys get involved, they have to get paid, court costs need to get paid, and there is not much of a defense your GF can put together assuming the debt is legit and not under duress.
If they were offering me a payment plan to pay the debt off in full and not have any additional fees or costs assigned to me, I'd have to strongly consider accepting that deal.

What did they try to do to ruin you?

I’m not surprised at all. That’s how it works with lenders, landlords and most any other party that you owe money to and you stop communicating with them.
If her supposed business deal was real, why didn’t she offer that as an explanation to the creditor, along with a time estimate?
And my big question, which I don’t believe anyone has asked you yet: is she involving you in this drama in the hope that you’ll float some money her way to make this go away???
If so, run, my boy. Run like the wind! Getting in a financial jam is just something that happens in life sometimes. But a person who dodges the debt and hides has a character issue, IMO.

American Express
AMEX has at least one lawyer in BR who does nothing but debt collection for them.
I know AMEX is not a great credit card deal. But you do get some cred at the business dinner when you slap down the metal Platinum. And the rental car insurance (particularly international) is terrific and actually works. I smashed one up in the UK and it was all handled without much trouble.

We have an AMEX Platinum and Gold.
Still, when you're down the rabbit hole with them, it's never pretty. So some of the things they threatened to do...cancel card (obv), collections, suit and wage garnishment. I paid it off before it could get nasty. There was never an offer to settle because they don't sell off the debt.
My card was cancelled, but in 2020 they offered me a Platinum again. And of course, I have no effective limit.
So its not really true what the rumor is..."Amex never removes you from the blacklist". It may have been true at one time but not anymore.

So rather than start a new thread I'm bumping an old one.
After making a certain amount of money does bankruptcy even matter? I see it used to slam athletes, celebrities, politicians, etc but it seems like a smart financial decision. They get out of an investment they owe millions on while taking a credit hit that doesn't even matter to them because they can afford everything with cash.
So why is bankruptcy still seen as so "taboo"

Stop paying your student loans. Nobody will ever make you fork over the $$

I paid mine when the pandemic first hit and then quit because I realized they would just keep pushing it back. I'm not having interest hit me so why not

I see it where they sue for less than 11k all the damn time. Best thing to do is to settle, unless she's broke and judgment proof

Just because you file doesn’t mean you get out of paying it back. They still have ways to collect including liquidating investments, garnishing future wages, selling assets…

Credit card debt is a deal breaker. Also not being able to pay off $11k in debt is pretty bad

There are situations that could be explainable, but just spending recklessly is a deal breaker. More importantly, have debt w a company that is working with her and thinking she can just ghost them and it’ll go away is a much bigger issue than the debt itself

If she is a 9, just open her an onlyfans, charge a management fee, and you both can uhhhh, work form home!

If she straight up doesn't have the money, then that's that. Can't get blood from a stone - ultimately the worst they can do is nuke her credit score, which they will. She won't be buying a house anytime soon but from what I've seen most people won't be heh.
In retrospect, well most companies won't give a shite and just say give me my money now - but some will work with you, I've heard of some companies converting the CC debt to a lower interest loan and then cancelling the CC which is more manageable to most people.
