is Square the most recommended card reader for a small business owner
Posted by UGATiger26 on 9/25/20 at 10:14 am20
My wife is starting her own side-business, and is thinking through payment options.
All I know about is square. But is that the gold standard for this type of thing? Or is there something else that she should look into?
TIA

It’s certainly the easiest to use. Square also has a simple point of sale app so you can use a phone or iPad like a cash register.

Shopify POS, especially if you’re selling inventory related goods via Shopify anyway. It all ties in without needing any connections or 3rd party software.

PayPal is expensive as hell too. A lot of these payment processors that you see advertising are like Quicken Loans or other crappy products by making their money advertising to market themselves as cool and then vastly overcharge their customers in rates.
I don’t know anything about point of sale processors, but I’d suspect you can get much better deals through someone that doesn’t advertise nationally.

Square doesn’t have a monthly fee. So if you don’t have a lot of volume from credit cards, it can be a good service.
If you have a lot of volume, there are cheaper options than square.

I have clients who stopped using Square because it’s encryption wasn’t secure. If that’s a concern of yours, Shopify works nice if she gets any bigger.

Thanks, that's good to know. The last I'd heard they weren't so I'd avoided them.

Quickbooks has several different plans including a low volume, no annual fee, I believe that it's 2.5% if swiped. It does not have to be connected to the online QB account, I believe that they market it under the name GoPayment
