Not many on the MTB. OT might be a more interesting thread.

I'd set the over/under of those saying that their neighbors have any influence at all on their spending at 0.5.

Few, if that's the definition of keeping up w Joneses.
Maybe I'm off but always thought of it as being as much or more so about seeing what others have and thinking "I would really enjoy that" or even "I need that." For instance, my neighbors have nicer patios and pools. I often leave their places thinking we'd really benefit from an upgrade to similar backyard but it's not at all about impressing them. Seeing nice things others enjoy inevitably raises the bar to some degree on our own expectations/desires. I doubt anyone keeps that 100% in check if they have means to afford some increased lifestyle over time.

I wouldn’t say keeping up with the Joneses but I do spend money on stupid shite and would have way more money if I could cut my spending. Could still have really nice stuff but I tend to go overboard on everything. Like not to the top of what I could spend that puts me in a bind but way more then what’s needed.

If I would just be smart but I’m a fricking retard and it’s almost like I have to push the limits.

Did that with all my cars, house, 4 wheelers, guns, scopes, and tons of other stupid shite. I guess at the end of the day it’s what I enjoy and you can’t take the money with you so why not enjoy some nice shite while I’m younger.

I'll co-sign this.

I will say my house is average for our neighborhood and could use a little upgrading and my wife's vehicle is paid off, but she does talk about a new one constantly.

But yeah, on the other stuff I can get a little stupid. Guns, scopes, golf clubs, going out to eat, stuff like that.

I didn't need a new gun, but that Sako felt so good in my hands that day at Van's.

I didn't need a new scope, but that Leica was on sale.

Man, those Ping mallet putters sure roll nice on the carpet in golf shops. Not the $250 ones, the $450 PLD one's that won't gain me one stroke over the next 10 rounds.

Yeah, let me go buy a $50 ribeye instead of going to Walmart and getting the 16 oz prime and doing it myself for $20.

Hampton Inn @ $150/night WITH the continental breakfast? Nice, but the boutique hotel downtown is $200/night, has a cool name, and across the street from popular new brunch spot.

I do all of this for my own dumb arse enjoyment though, not the validation of others.

Appreciate the authenticity and humanness in your post. There is something about those something’s that you shared!

Curious, does budget or trade off come into play when you take decision to make that purchase of those putters, for example? ie, you did or did not budget for them? If not, do you give up something else to get the putters (another budgeted thing or savings/investments)?

To all the folks saying 0, I hope you've never agreed to go out with a friend/neighbor to dinner when asked, because that would technically be getting influenced by a jones

Long story short, everyone gets influenced by those they hang around, but how much of that goes into your spending does land on you. It could just be the occasional dinner out when asked, or it could be buying a $100k car because thats what most people have in the neighborhood.

I'll take the occasional dinner out when asked

Most people aren’t going to say they buy stuff to impress others.

But I see people in nice suits or cars and I think they are trying to impress others when those things are utilitarian items for me. But maybe those people just like nice suits or nice cars.

I will spend money on trips and food because that’s what I like. TD is my only social media and I don’t post are talk about them with people. I do it because I’m thrifty elsewhere and prioritize that. Others might see it otherwise.
Also, I can’t say my trips aren’t influenced by others. I don’t go somewhere to impress anyone. But if someone went somewhere and enjoyed an experience, I might try that thing if it interest me.

Interesting topic if you really delve into it.

Most people’s spending is highly influenced by various types of marketing. The amount of “programming” everyone goes thru, even those adamant they are immune to it, is scary.

It’s just different for everyone. I spend a decent amount on traveling but not near as much as I could if I don’t spend so much on ranch payments, deer lease payments and all the shite that goes along with my hobbies. I would love to have a GT3 in my garage but I’d rather have land and a broke arse tractor I’m always fixing.

Outside of my annual PC work trip out of the country most of my vacations have been 3-4 days to NY, Napa and sporting events. Not really a world traveler or long vacations to the mountains or beach.

My neighbor is rather boastful as well as showy. I listen and nod and am like bitch I could buy all that and more but it’s not important to me to keep up with you. But I say nothing.

And I’m pretty sure our retirement portfolio is a good bit better than theirs. Not that it matters and not that I would ever tell them that.

I did eat with someone recently after golf.
I try to connect with friends if I’m out of town in their area.
I did that twice in Nashville in 2023. I planned a meal out with friends in San Diego in 2024. Enjoyed all of that.

I treated a foursome to cart and green fees recently. I did it to be nice, not to impress anyone. We had drinks afterward. Someone else paid for that.
We had a good time, but I don’t think anyone was overwhelmingly impressed though it was a very nice course.
