How far would you commute to double your salary?
If I'm doubling my salary I'm looking for a new place to live close to my new job.

Currently have 4 kids, 3 of them in sports. My wife and I don't have family in town, and the brunt of carpooling the kids around falls on her as it is now.
If I'm offered this job, I would make approximately $140k more a year, which would alleviate a lot of financial burden, but I would be looking at a 3 hour 40 minute roundtrip 5 days a week. Ideally be home by 7-7:30pm every night, so wouldn't be able to spend much time with my kids until the weekend. Just curious how others would respond to this scenario.
"Honey, kids... we're moving."

How old are the kids
We just moved into what we thought would be our forever home at the beginning of the year. Going through another house buying process with continued rising interest rates is nauseating to think about.

You’ll be making 280k per year and buying in or around houma Louisiana. You’ll be ok.

What is your current commute? If you are currently doing 2 hours round trip, there may not be a noticeable difference. If you are used to a 30-minute round trip; you will dread that drive after a few weeks.
Based on the kids age in a later post, I would not be willing to do it as you are missing some key family time during major developmental milestones; which you probably already know since you have a 12 y/o.
Will this allow your wife to be a stay-at-home (assuming she isn't already) to help alleviate some of the added stress she will now have?

Ok ok

Probably 90mins

Bad for your heart, bad for your brain
To come to this disturbing conclusion researchers out of the UK's University of Leicester and an area hospital teamed up to analyze a massive trove of data on the lifestyles of more than 500,000 Brits aged 37 to 73. At the beginning of the study and occasionally over a five year period the participants' intelligence and memory was assessed.
The researchers found a startling correlation when they crunched the numbers -- the more you drove, the dumber you got.
Study subjects who reported driving more than two hours a day, not only had less brain power when the researchers first assessed them, but they also saw more rapid declines in intelligence over the course of the research.
What's the problem with all that time spent driving? The researchers suggest the issue isn't something car specific like exhaust fumes or the ergonomics of the driver's seat. Instead, it's a combination of sitting and being bored to tears that seems to dent your intelligence.
"We know that regularly driving for more than two to three hours a day is bad for your heart. This research suggests it is bad for your brain, too, perhaps because your mind is less active in those hours," commented Kishan Bakrania, an epidemiologist who worked on the research.

Hell. No. With a 12 year old, I can't understand how you're even entertaining losing that much time with the younger ones. You'd be leaving before they woke up, and getting home probably after dinner.

With double the salary, you could be without a mortgage within five years.

If this is true /thread. You're not going to get that much time with the kids - and you're willingly giving up every weeknight for money in your scenario.

They don't have any decent private schools in Houma? With you making a quarter million a year, your wife can homeschool if need be. Arrange weekend playdates with their Broussard friends if that's what you're worried about.

Wife quits her job. By the time you account for the tax bracket change with your new job plus costs for her existing job, you may well come out ahead with just one income, and she can shuffle kids all day.

The answer is either move or don't take the job.
If you don't move, you are taking the job for money at the expense of time with kids.
If you move, you get the money and the kids.
Good Luck!

Easy answer is take the job and move closer to the office.

For +$140,000 a year I’m either moving the family out there or buying a helicopter/plane to commute.
Posted on 9/20/23 at 3:00 pm to Ostrich
I would move. But if your family refuses to move, suck it up and do this 2-3 years and save every single penny.
Will be hard, but if you saved and invested this, you'll have more options than you need.
But thats me.

I might find a way to make it work, but it definitely would not be by taking a

Would never do that with the drive you are talking about. You would be useless with exhaustion just from the drive getting to work. You then put in about 5 hrs then mentally you are already preparing for the drive back.Nope wouldnt do it it. Now a few days from home and say 3 days a week then yes.
