How am I doing so far?

Getting the board opinion on how you guys think I am doing so far with my retirement funds. I am currently maxing out my Roth IRA every year and currently have around $60k in that. I also have an 401k through my employer that puts up 3% as long as I put in at least 1%. I currently have around $30k in that. I am 33 years old and have been working since I was 25. I am about 18 months away from paying off student loans and then I plan to put more into my 401k. What say you fellas on how I am doing thus far?

Doing a lot better than most at your age. Keep it up

do you have any kids?
this will determine if you are fabulously wealthy or just another shmuck (like me).
kids are worth it, but a severe limiting factor in growing wealth in most traditional avenues.

if u compare that against people on this board your completely behind. Most 33 yr olds that post have a paid off house and over $3m in their portfolios. But against the rest of the United States your absolutely on the right track.

I was in grad school getting my doctorate in Physical Therapy. I do have really soft hands though. My patients love them.

Hey how much does a PT make? Ballpark

It definitely depends on what type of PT you do. Working in the hospital I would estimate starting around $65-70k. Working in an outpatient clinic is closer to $75-80k usually with bonuses depending on how many patients you see. Working in a nursing home can bring in closer to $90k because no one wants to do that honestly. Home health is where the most money is. You can easily make over six figures doing home health. But the types of patients can make that line of work pretty depressing and not very fun.

My wife works at a fitness club down here in South Florida called John's Island Club. A bunch of incredibly wealthy people. It has a $400K joining fee, plus you have to own a house in the community, which ain't cheap.
Anyway, she says the biggest business at the fitness club is personal trainers and masseuses. They charge something like $180/session. All these rich folks have more money than they can spend and spend it on what makes them feel better as they get older. Some of the older ones need physical therapy, but a lot of them just want a massage 3-4 times a week.
The business slacks off in the summer, because a good number of them only winter down here, but my wife says that they are 100% booked from open to close during the season. Some of them have their masseuses come to their home because making an appointment can be dicey...
I would say that would be an awesome place to work...

No joke.
We spent close to $200k from daycare through 12th grade. Would be a pretty big chunk of change if we would have invested that over 15 years.
But I wouldn't change a thing.

Don't know what you're 4% to the 401k equates to in dollars, but if you keep maxing out the ROTH for 20 years at a 10% rate of return, you're looking at over $900k at age 53. If you do that to age 60, it's $1.9 million.
Keep doing what you're doing.
Keep doing what you're doing.

Exactly, like they say "time in the market is better than timing the market"

Hope you never need PT then. Good luck never getting injured or having arthritis!

Why wait? Are you maxing out what you’re paying on your student loans? Why? Years of money in 401k worth way more than student loan interest. Might want to consider putting more in the 401k and less into student loans if you 2anted to be smart about it. But I would say your above most and behind some.

PT salary is 40+/hr in BR and BR is known for low wages.

I'd say you're a "Big Baller"!
Great start.
One thought — employer 401(k) money is free money, so always make sure you’re getting every dollar they’ll give you. Sounds like you already are. Once those student loans are gone, I’d start pushing that 401(k) percentage up pretty aggressively if you can.
One other thing — you didn’t mention a cash emergency fund. I’d want 3–6 months of expenses somewhere safe and liquid before getting too aggressive with the 401(k). I use Fidelity’s SPAXX money market fund for that purpose.
