The research scientists that I know get to turn all of their work over to the environmental attorneys, and they are amazed at the amount these people are making off of their research. They claim that the attorneys don't know squat, but I imagine that is becuase they are, well, research scientists.
Possibility of sticking it out and working in energy for a few years, then law school? Years in the field could put you in a good situation with a corporation or large firm, with an option to go back home.

I don't know a single person who said "damn I wish I didn't waste my time on an engineering degree."
I sure as hell am not regretting my engineering degree. My older brother did international business and after 4 years in the workforce, he constantly complains about how he wished he would have done a technical degree.

If you finished engineering you could still apply for the same jobs you would with a finance degree, you would just have even more options
If you don't like any degree just get the hardest one you can, get out, and work

Oilfield is something I find really cool, and I'd totally be fine working in it, just not as an engineer. Just wasn't my thing Some kind of business position, perhaps.
Engineering just didn't get me off like I thought it would
And yes, I am at the money vs happiness crossroad
As a finance major, I can say that I sometimes regret not going down the engineering road because the O&G industry is something that really appeals to me, and it would be nice to have that technical background.
I'm not going to give you some shite advice because I'm not you, but if you can work in the field for 4-5 few years and go back and get your MBA, you'd be in great shape for doing what it sounds like you are interested in.

I was going to say that too. Maybe he should switch from Pete to Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, etc. since he would have some of the required general engineering classes already.
If the OP wants to go into a business sort of field though, I would not recommend Econ. I would recommend Accounting+CIA+possibly minor in ISDS or do Finance+CIA+possibly minor in ISDS. I said this on an OT thread the other night, my only academic regret is not minoring in ISDS. It has opened a lot of doors for my Accounting friends who have minored in it in addition to the Accounting+CIA path.

Go Construction Management. It has enough challenge to keep you from being bored. The job choices are pretty fun and allow you to get out in the field and deal with people, sit in an air conditioned office and crunch numbers if you prefer that, or do a little of both if that's more your speed.
There's also a ton of jobs in it right now, they pay pretty well (not as well as PETE, but certainly nothing to sneeze at), and there is tons of opportunity for advancement.
Also, the degree teaches you a large number of marketable skills that are applicable even in other industries.

Oh, and the critical path for CM only takes 5 semesters if you've already got your gen eds and physics classes knocked out as you should.

In law school, engineering majors do second best on the tests (technical precision inclinations).
English majors are first b/c of their writing skills.

I was in a similar situation you are in now, decided to go CM and its been good to me. You have alot of career options and can work all over. Plus, as mentioned already, with the classes you have already taken, you should be able to finish pretty quickly

I began college with the notion of becoming a Hospital Administrator but Business School was not for me...I stayed in school and studied what I enjoyed and eventually became a Master prepared Social Worker and eventually become a Hospital Administrator (have since retired) and now Pastor a Church and direct a Wellness Center...follow your interests and get paid to do so

I will say this, people who say money is more important typically feel that way because they believe money will lead to happiness. So happiness is usually always the correct path.
The question is what's going to make you happy.

I would stick with engineering especially if you have knocked out all the pre-reqs.
You could always get an engineering degree + MBA and work more on the mgmt/financial side of oil.

I'd major in some kind of engineering just bc of the value. Then do whatever you want

It's not easy to get a good job right out of school with an Econ degree because it doesn't teach you any real tangible skill that you can immediately apply in the real world. Econ is good for teaching you how to think, but won't get you very far post-grad unless you have some decent internships or you are heading straight to grad school. I graduated in Econ 2 years ago and had a hard time finding a job in the field I wanted(Investments) because everyone wanted finance or accounting degrees. I ended up finding a great job that I really like, but I had to hustle for it and feel like I would have had a much easier time if I had done FIN or ACCT.
I also agree with everyone mentioning ISDS. There are so many good tech jobs out there that want recent grads with basic tech skills. Just getting a minor in that would put you ahead of lots of folks.
