I'm helping my dad buy a new truck for the farm. We placed a deposit back in November. It's basically February, no truck.

This dealer has a ton of used inventory, but very little new. Any new trucks are 1/2 tons, not what we are looking for.

We purchased a 3500 w/ dump body last year and had to drive 4 hours to get it.

Talking to my dad this morning. He just traded in his 2 year old F150 that he just put 50K on in those two years. THey gave him 6K over what he bought it for new two years ago.

Saw a report that during Apple earnings yesterday Tim Cook said he expects supply chain issues to start easing up in the upcoming months. Not sure how specific that is to Apple or to industry as a whole but they have been hampered by the chip shortage like everyone else. I'd wait to see how things start to shake out before I think about buying a vehicle.

Hate to piggyback on your thread, but I'm in a very similar situation currently.

I'm in a Nissan Maxima with 170k miles that I still enjoy driving and would be more than willing to drive until 250k miles or more. However, the detail I feel aggravates the high mileage is that my car is 12 years old. Having to replace some tires tomorrow has me re-considering if now is the time to eek some value out of the car while it still has some.

Yes, but not as much as pre-pandemic.

Supply and demand is in full effect for SUVs and trucks, good luck trying to negotiating to the MSRP.

Also, there is a 3 month back log at body shops around NOLA, so if you get in a wreck, prayers.

Bought mine in Nov. They couldn’t keep anything on the lot bc people were paying sticker price. I ended up buying mine before the car made it to the lot. They took about 8% off and I was able to get 3 year oil changes instead of 1. But had to pay $1k for their premium warranty package.

I wanted the tires package w everyone getting new roofs in my neighborhood. Already got 1 “free tire” after having the car for <3 months (caught a strip of nails under some leaves that did some good damage)

I traded my 03 in last year with 250k and still going strong. You have plenty of time left, if you took care of it

My understanding is the chips used in vehicles are proprietary or old old tech, and the shortage for them will last longer than other electronics.

What do you mean you "had" to pay 1K for their premium warranty package. Like an extended service contract?

It's their extended warranty package. Tire & rim replacement for 5 years, 3 years free oil changes, extended warrant (from 3 30k to 7 70k)... Sold me all of that for about $1k and was part of the negotiating to get the 8% off.

You got another 125k miles baw

this ^^^^^^^^

any vehicle will easily go 300k miles with regular maint and oil changes

the average person who doesnt drive a long way to work every day drives 10k-12k miles a year, so you easily got 10 more trouble free years left in that truck minus maybe a worn out front end part or something like that

Bump.

Sitting at 181k miles on 2015 F-150.

I'll try to drive it as long as she'll give me.

However, I'm gonna need something in the next 6-24 months. When is the car market going to normalize? $83,000 for a brand new loaded F-150 is unreal. This isn't sustainable. And it's not a matter of "can I?" it's "should I?"

I purchased a 2022 F150 3 months ago

I did get a great trade-in price on my 2019, which was fairly close to what I paid for it a few years ago

For the new one, I was able to find a dealer that accepted X-plan pricing which saved me about 3500 off of MSRP

I feel I did pretty well considering the conditions.

It’s a vehicle with nearly 200k miles. The chances of a transmission going out or something catastrophic are relatively high.

X-plan is basically an agreed upon price usually given to companies that ford partners with like suppliers, etc. Its kind of like employee pricing, but not quite as low, closer to invoice pricing.

My employer is a ford supplier so we get that perk. It's extremely common though and I believe it can be shared among family members.

If it makes you feel any better my truck is 2002 Chevy with 347k miles. I’m waiting like you for “normalization” on supply and prices.
