Buying a vehicle: with supply chain issues, is negotiating even a thing nowadays?

I'm creeping up on 175k miles on my Ford F-150. It runs great, but I know it's days are likely numbered.
I am used to using the Will Cover method, and really working the dealers over.
However, I bought this truck in the beginning of 2016. It's been 6 years since I've gone through this process.
Has anyone bought a car recently?
I'm just curious to hear what dealers are doing. I'm hoping the longer I wait, the better it will be to normal, but who knows with this crazy world of ours.

I'd imagine the roles have essentially been reversed. There's such little supply out there that dealers have no issue just waiting until someone walks in and is willing to take whatever deal is thrown their way

Right now, you're basically trying to negotiate DOWN to MSRP. And, they'll only sell you a vehicle (especially SUVs and trucks) at MSRP if you to get all that other bullsh!t they always try to scam you with like extended warranties.

You can negotiate...negotiate to see if you have the opportunity to buy the car
Best case scenario is you find a dealer who won't charge over MSRP on princeple.

You'll get higher for your truck than you would have normally, but not sure your truck will make up the difference on how much higher you will have to pay for a new car. Used cars are crazy too, and some higher than new cars. Crazy.
There are some good dealers that are not going too crazy above MSRP, but you'll have to find them. That is really your best approach, as they are probably still paying pretty good on trade-ins.
Obviously it all depends on what you are looking for, and how long you are willing to wait. If you burnt bridges with your typical approach, then it might also come back to bite you in the butt now, as a salesman doesn't have to deal with that crap atm.
I do wonder how the used car market in 3-5yrs will be with how much people are paying for vehicles right now. Right now, in the used market, I think we are seeing an affect from the cash for clunkers deal.

A friend of mine was looking for a vehicle about a month ago and they would't even give him the price unless he went to the lot. It was basically either you want the vehicle or not.

How much longer is this shite going to last? I'll be in the market again this Summer. Hoping by then it's cooled down a good bit

I guess that's my question.
I go to a dealer in southern Oklahoma (the one Joe Exotic made famous ) and they have ALWAYS negotiated aggressively.
Curious where they currently fall...

Funny story I heard the other day. Someone I know went to Mercedes recently to order a new car. He finished his deal and he was shooting the shite with salesman and the guy says the week before, they sold the last G-wagon they could get their hands on for almost 100k over msrp.
I think G-wagons are ugly as fk; but thats the state of where we are in the luxury vehicle market. Probably some G that paid with cash, this was probably 2 months ago; dont know if the situation is different.

Dealers are adding to the sticker price. We’ve been shopping and it’s not fun.

Should end when chip shortage is over. Some manufacturers think their chip shortage will be over by mid-2022, but others think it will last until 2023.
Hope your car lasts long enough for production to get back to normal. ...and might want to wait about 2 years after that because there will be pent up demand once autos hit the lots. IF prices do not drop, then demand will stay high. Many people can not afford these high prices.

No they are not negotiating
My wife wants a camry and the dealer told me these issues are going to be here till 2023

Wait until Taiwan is under the red flag. The chip shortage will definitely work itself out for the US. All these forecasts mean nothing. The only one that really is clear at this point is we should be able to start producing some of our own chips in 2025ish.

With extended finance options (ten years WTF), and consumers unwilling to "settle" for something they don't want, they are paying the outrageous prices for new and used cars.
I'll never understand why someone would ever pay more than 30k for a vehicle. It blows my mind.
I know people in there 20s and 30s that make 50k a year with 1200/month payments.
