Was reading WSJ. Anchor stores like JCP and Sears and closing down. Online sales are going up. I haven't been in an indoor mall in about 5 years.

Don't think so. The mall by me is Aventura Mall and it stays packed with cars and people year round.

I still shop there for clothes whenever I need something. And I absolutely hate shopping and am not a fan of malls, but when I want clothes I want to be able to look at them in person (not a picture of them) and try them on for fit, sometimes get tailoring, etc. About the only clothed I buy online are shoes and belts.

People have said this about malls for years and yet they're still busy.

I have, but not as nearly as I used to go. For me (and surprisingly my wife), we go about 2 or 3 times a year. Would rather shop online or venture to an "outdoor" outlet mall.

The last few times I've been to the Mall of Louisiana, let's just say the clientele that frequents these establishments don't appear to be spending any money and prefer to loiter from store to store with their pants sagging and can be very loud and obnoxious. Something I prefer to stay away from since I have two smaller children.

you aren't there target market. If you go to an indoor mall, you will find that most of the stores are for teenagers/early 20s.

The only time I go to the mall is
a) to buy a suit
b) to go to the apple store

I loathe it but I don't see them going away. Retailers are looking to differentiate bricks and mortar stores vs online, and an indoor mall offers a distinctly different experience than online shopping. And some people prefer it.

Also, going to the mall is social thing for some adults. For instance, apparently muslims in my area like to go to the mall and meet with friends and talk. i think b.c there is no admittance fee, no smoking, and in general well kept area its a good place to congregate. my token muslim friend told me this a few years ago that he takes his family to the mall every weekend, and meet friends.

Women online clothes sales are still pretty small. Its an experience for women and they need to try things on and browse.

I think we will see consolidation.

About 20 years ago, Columbia had about 4-5 malls.

Today, there is only 1 mall left that is doing well and 1 mall on life support.

More of a JCP and Sears problem IMO. Malls will come and go but the more upscale indoor malls seem to be humming along just fine.

I've never seen the appeal of these outdoor mall/town centers over the traditional mall. At least not in a states that get blistering hot in the summer.

It's less of an ordeal/hassle if you just want to go to one store.

People aren't really wanting to go store to store in malls to check stuff out anymore, it seems.

Yeah, I can see that but my experience is unusual. Lucy buys all of her clothes on line. She's 5-7, 116. Wears a size 2. She knows it will fit. She hates crowds. Her browsing needs are satisfied by online shopping.

The last time I tried to get into a local mall all the stores were closed till 10 a.m. WTF is up with that? I'm at Starbucks at 6 am. I can't wait 4 hours.

I hate the outdoor malls, i never know where anything is, parking seems worse, they look a little better but overall i think they suck.

1. Easier parking - quick access to the store(s) you wish to visit
2. No food court & no entertainment, and usually no movie theatre = less teenagers & undesirables meandering about with no intention of spending money

My only experience with outdoor malls is in CA and they are very impressive. Century City for example in LA is a ridiculously nice outdoor mall.

There hasn't been a single indoor mall built since 2007.

Think about that.

I greatly prefer the experience of an indoor mall (especially during those scorching South Louisiana summers). However, outdoor malls are better for just going in and out quickly. If I need to browse, try on stuff, check out multiple places, ect, that's better in a closed mall where I don't sweat my arse off in between stores. I don't know about you, but I prefer not trying on clothes when I'm covered in sweat and prefer not to try on clothes after someone else has tried them on while covered in sweat.
