I think the issue at hand here is pretty silly. But to call it a "flying car" is also silly.
It doesn't have a fly mode that can practically fly you around on your daily commute. So why would anyone consider it a flying car?

Bc that’s what people do.
I highly doubt anyone who calls it a flying car is going to be disappointed when they surprisingly find out it can’t fly them to work.

No, it was a powered flight based on aerodynamic lift. It would keep gliding once in the air, and they actually glided much longer and further before the first powered flight. They needed to add an engine and make it powered (lifting with the extra weight) to be called the first flight rather than the first glide.

and if there was an internet then 3/4s of the population would laugh at the insignificance of it, just like now with this
Mostly the people rushing to downplay this are either Elon haters because he has said nice things about Trump or generic naysayers showing how "smart" they are who downplay it like it is the end result.
I wonder how many people downplaying this now were hyping self-driving trucks 12 years ago. They were supposed to be dominating by now. Ah, the Obama years, where anything was possible!

I like Elon a lot. I'm a huge fan of SpaceX and generally hope he succeeds. I am drawn to a Tesla for many reasons, but I don't like the centralization of it.
He basically proves private companies can do it better than government.
But it's not a flying car. It's Knight Rider come to life, which is still pretty fricking cool.

This concept is no different than jet packs or more recently fly boards. It has more in common with those than the stupid skateboard analogy SFP has been using.
