The Buckeyes would be worth $1.96 billion if the team could be sold on the open market, according to an analysis by Ryan Brewer, an associate professor of finance at Indiana University Columbus. That puts Ohio State just ahead of Texas ($1.9 billion) and rival Michigan ($1.66 billion), with six other programs—Georgia, Notre Dame, LSU, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas A&M—topping the billion dollar mark.

Brewer conducts his study by analyzing a program’s finances and asking: What would it be worth if it could be bought and sold like a professional franchise?

Brewer looks at top-line revenues, growth and drivers of cash flow and makes projections about the sustainability of the operation, just as he would with any other business. It isn’t a mere one-year snapshot, either—he combed through years of data for 131 major college football programs, from the heavyweights all the way down to Louisiana-Monroe. Then, after breaking down everything from television viewership to trends in enrollment, his spreadsheet finally spits out an answer.

Brewer’s analysis also accounts for factors that might not appear on any balance sheet. Alabama, for instance, used to get a bump simply because of the value one person brought to the program. But Nick Saban is no longer the coach of the Crimson Tide, and the team missed the expanded playoff without him.

This explains why Alabama was begging their sidewalk fanbase for money.

They’re poor as frick.

There is a reason their enrollment is mostly OOS kids (many from big northern cities). Smart strategy to build for the future.

Right.

I'm from a family of generational LSU grads and now I have nieces and nephews attending Alabama. They recruit hard in Louisiana (especially in the Florida parishes) and provide scholarships and financial incentives that makes it really hard to turn down.

So, LSU has the money, facilities, fan support, prime recruiting base...wonder why LSU is now perceived as a second tier SEC program, with 7 or 8 other SEC teams ranked ahead of them in 2024 & early 2025 rankings?
Time to do some soul searching at ALL levels - administration, fan base, web sites, Bayou Traditions, etc.

I think most people have LSU between 3rd and 6th in the SEC next year.

Even more reason to be frustrated that we failed to bring in more talent in 2023 and 2024.

Who thinks this? Unless the first tier is just UGA, UT, and Alabama (all of which have either higher valuations or Nick Saban for 20 years), no one of significance thinks LSU is a second rate program. No one actually believes Tennesee, A&m, or Ole Miss are better programs than LSU, outside of those respective fan bases. UGA has won recent titles, Alabama had Nick Saban, and Texas always gets propped up much higher than they deserve, but they've also been to two consecutive CFP, but again with much easier schedules.

The lowest I've seen on a pre-season poll is #8 nationally, behind only Texas and UGA.

Or maybe we had a head coach who ruined the program in 2 years and we're in the process of getting it back on track?

176, how many SEC teams were included in the 2024 final rankings?
LSU wasn't.

I submit that LSU is in the preseason 2025 top 10 not because of ability but because of "brand", just like we were in '24, '23, etc.

Q: If we continue on the road we are on, how long will the brand last?
See Alabama...

I know we all hope their assumptions about Alabama football prove to be correct, but actual historical results, financial performance, and TV viewership do not align with those assumptions. Alabama had a dry spell in the late 90s-early 2000s not unlike LSU’s a decade earlier. Apart from that time frame, Bama has generally been national contenders for the last 100 years.

as someone who is involved with PE, these are wild arse guesses with zero basis in reality... So kind of in line with what I would expect of level three.

And Bear. Very pedestrian program otherwise, aside from the other imaginary championships from the 1840’s that they love to claim

Disagree. LSU would be number 1. Factoring in food and tailgating and total reputation gets LSU to the top. Recency bias is stupid.

They clearly benefited the most from illegal paying of players before NIL.
