Nick Saban is the greatest college football coach of all time

Nick Saban coached at LSU

LSU is a major brand and has been for 20+ years now

LSU knows that Saban helped create that

LSU wants to remind the dumb general public, (huh, that Saban guy used to coach LSU?)

Woody is just helping attach LSU to the biggest sports story going on right now

Telling recruits our staff sucks is badmouthing.

At times our staff did suck. Coach O and Les Miles were the reason Saban was able to be critical of LSU to recruits. Coach O is a terrible example, he literally hired bad staffs outside of 2019. You should be getting angry at our Coaches not Saban lol.

totally uncalled for.

I wouldn't say "totally". But he went FAR deeper in his adulation than what was necessary. All he should have said was...(eliminate the part in bold)

“I first met Nick Saban in 1999 when he arrived in Baton Rouge, and it did not take long for him to make his mark on our university – and on me. While I was sad to see him leave LSU in 2004, I was not surprised at all by his unprecedented run at Alabama. Coach Saban set a new standard for excellence in college football and steps away with seven national championships, record-setting wins, rankings and draft picks, and the admiration of his peers and the thousands of young men whose lives he helped transform. Simply, there is no greater coach in the history of the game of college football than Nick Saban. Whether he was coaching on your sideline or the opposite, he brought out the very best in all of us who love this sport, because the best is what he demanded of his teams, his peers, and himself. I congratulate him and Miss Terry and wish them all the best in retirement.”

Like it or not, Nick Saban IS a big and important part of LSU football history. That absolutely should be acknowledged. But the effusive praise is unnecessary. Just acknowledge his success and congratulate him on retirement. Then move on. Alabama is still one of your biggest competitors.

And he is no longer the head coach at Alabama. He wasn't heaping praise on Alabama. He was praising Saban.

"Bo had great connections to Ohio State," said Archie Griffin, who was recruited by Schembechler as a high school student before coming to Ohio State, where he played for Coach Woody Hayes. "He played for Woody Hayes at Miami and later coached with Woody here. Many people have the misconception that Woody and Bo disliked each other. That couldn't be further from the truth. They were best friends and very similar to each other."

"This is an extraordinary loss for college football," said Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel. "Bo Schembechler touched the lives of many people and made the game of football better in every way. He will always be both a Buckeye and a Wolverine and our thoughts are with all who grieve his loss."

Noted Ohio State Director of Athletics Eugene Smith, "Bo touched the lives of so many and helped develop countless young men into role models and leaders. He is an icon for college athletics, not just the game of football. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family, the University of Michigan and college football fans everywhere."

Sometimes, a man gets up from the mat and shakes his opponent’s hand. Everyone can’t win in life like Saban did.

I can be critical of Scott sometimes but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this statement. Totally appropriate.

Uncalled for? He coached LSU to it's first national championship in 50 years...how is that uncalled for? And while at Alabama, he never disparaged LSU publicly, despite the ridiculous hatred LSU fans spewed at him for over 15 years.

Imagine a Michigan athletic Director writing some like this for a departed Ohio State coach…

Bo Schembechler gave a very warm tribute to Woody Hayes when Hayes died.
