Why wasn’t Pelini successful at LSU the second go around?

Why didn’t Pelini succeed the second go around? I was very excited when LSU hired him, still can’t believe we were that bad last year on defense...

Because there are no more 3 yards and a cloud of dust offenses in the SEC anymore.

I think it was a fit issue as well. O was going to interfere, and there was just a hodge podge if coaches left that didn’t mesh with his system.

Add in losing a ton of practice and training time along with the significant attrition and you end up with this disaster.

He spent more time to on his golf game than he did on LSUs defense

Let's be honest. His first go around wasn't that great either.

I mean, this was against a team that ran 4 plays.

Pelini was a good coach. He just lost the fire. It happens.

Did you miss his defenses against spread offenses back in 2005-2007? Back when spreads were still relatively simple and predictable?

Round 2 was always going to be a disaster.

This. Most of these are not his fault. That's why I would understand if he was given another year.

The only thing that is his "fault" is the 4-3 switch, and to this day, I don't understand why Orgeron wanted a coach to do this, at this time.

In Coach O's defense, he hired Pelini before the pandemic hit (and killed the spring practices).

He lost the team early. An absolute 180 compared to Aranda’s personality. He screamed more in one practice than Dave did in a year.

All true, but Bo’s refusal or inability to adjust compounded it all. We could have been an average defense in 2020 in more capable hands. We were a disaster because the man didn’t adapt to modern SEC offenses.

Remember the first two games of 2005? He didn’t adapt implementing his scheme back then, either. That defense just happened to be absolutely loaded with talent and veteran leaders, so they got it and played great after the adjustment period. Pelini’s scheme was also better suited to those pro-style offenses of the time.

But 05 still shows what Bo was and still is. He’s going to run his defense and that’s it.

These are all correct and LSU was affected more than any other team in the country; however, in spite of the circumstances there is no getting around that Pelini just did a poor job this year.

Lack of adjustment to the spread. The spread offenses werent run by many teams we daced back in the mid-2000s. When we did run up against them, his defenses struggled even back then. There is a reason his youngstown st defenses were horrible too. Id be leary of any DC that hasnt run a good defense in the last 6-7 years where offenses have morphed into mostly spread concepts
