I'm not sure I know exactly the reason why these guys got this 5th yr of eligibility?
Is this a stand alone year or covid related?

I think SEC is just going to drag it out to get their way and the schools will give up.

It’s a new 5 for 5 rule and applies to every class except for 2022. A judge said nope, it applies to them too

It is another example of poor leadership and outright incompetence of the NCAA

They made the new 5 for 5 rule but were too stupid to include the 2022 freshmen class which was still in that 5 year window.

Had they done that, none of this would be happening. But it’s the NCAA so their next good idea will be their first.

The new rule is that everybody gets 5 years of eligibility. Period. This rule was supposed to start with the class of 2023. Everyone before that had to play by the previous set of rules. A judge said that they believed that the new rule should be applied to the class of 2022.

Imo, it was never really that “unfair” for the class of 2022. They had the same rules that everyone before them had.

So it used to be you could get a 5th year if you redshirt. Now its just 5 full years of competition? Does a redshirt get you a 6th year? Or no such thing as a redshirt

You are correct. No such thing as a redshirt anymore.

Could be wrong but I think you get 5 years to play. No redshirt

Correct, no redshirt, medical redshirts, playing baseball and then starting your CFB career at 21, none of that. 5 year clock starts once you enroll in college or the school year after you turn 19 no matter what. So no more 25 year olds still playing or getting all these waivers. NCAA is trying to reign all that in with this new rule. We'll see how it goes in practice.

True. But, if you are a player that could end up having to get a real job, why not challenge the NCAA? Besides, the 5 for 5, starting in 2023 may give the impression of being an over site by one year, if you are class of 2022 you may say, " hey, wait a minute", "what about us"?

They lose in court a lot.

the guys playing spring sports were still actively competing in their sports when the rule was passed.
so singling out and excluding only one class of actual still current athletes was a dick move pretty much begging for a lawsuit.

the smarter choices would have been:
hold off on that decision until after springs sports were completely final, then announce new rule late in summer just before fall semester.
or
Include the 2022 class in the decision.

instead, they chose the only option that pretty much guaranteed they’d end up in court.

Its a little more. All the previous classes got an auto 5th year for rona. 2023 and beyond were getting 5 for 5. 2022 was basically the only year since the 2017 class not granted a 5th year. So the judge said no

The reason the new rule, which is a good one BTW in general, is unfair is that it was made known in late June...which happened to be reasonably soon after the drafts were completed. Obviously, the NCAA KNEW they were going to come out with this, and they KNEW in the spring. If they had done it then, that would have given the 2022 class OPTIONS whether to play another college season.

Let's see...2020 extra year due to COVID...2021 extra year due to COVID...2023 -> infinity extra year due to 5 for 5. Whose class am I leaving out? Oh yeah, the 2022 class got screwed and the NCAA KNEW they were screwing them.

They did hold off.

The rule was announced June 23rd which was the day after the conclusion of the CWS and the conclusion of the 2025-2026 sports season. The NCAA clearly says the new rule did not apply to the Class of '22 and applied only to athletes who would eligible in the fall of 2026.

LINK NCAA website 5 for 5

Instead of moving on with life Class of '22 athletes sued in federal court and of course the judge issued an injunction basically neutering the NCAA and creating chaos.

quote:

DENVER -- A federal court dealt a perhaps chaos-inducing blow to the NCAA's new eligibility rule Friday when it ruled that all high school class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season in 2026-27. The ruling from U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Denver, expected to be appealed, undercuts the NCAA's plan to have the so-called "five-for-five" rule go into play starting with athletes who enroll in college in fall 2027.

As noted above, the 2022 class got royally screwed by the NCAA as they are the only class this decade not to be given a 5th year.

Again, as noted above, if the NCAA would have simply included the 22 class in the 5for5, we would not be having this discussion right now.

And there is really no good reason why that class was left out.

Student-athletes who used their final season of competition (under previous rules) during 2025-26. No additional eligibility.

Please quit repeating this narrative. Go read the rule. It's not that it was unfair that it was made known in June. The rule clearly states the Class of '22 is not eligible. That is exactly why they waited until June.

That sucks but doesn’t necessarily mean that they got screwed. Unless you believe that every athlete that graduated before 2017 has also gotten screwed.

On the flip side, if that random judge just agreed with the rule, we also wouldn’t be having this discussion.

I’d imagine NFL teams that had just drafted players might have gotten mad if said player decided they wanted to go back to college.

There was really no good reason to leave them in either. They played out their eligibility without any expectation of another year.

Where was this outrage on this board in June? No body gave two shits until LSU decided they wanted to push the limits . . .

Lots of predictions that it would get overturned in court. 4 pages and not a single mention of how it was unfair to the guys that entered the NFL draft.
