Why are you mad about a 24-team playoff?

This is the size of playoff brackets at every other level of football.

Peewee - 8 (most of them)
Middle School - 8 (most of them)
High School - 32 (most of them)
JUCO - 2
NAIA - 20
Div III - 40
Div II - 32
FCS - 24
NFL - 14

For decades, people have presented this list and said "why doesn't FBS have a playoff?".

"bUt MuH rIvAl GaMe WoN't MaTtEr"

Ask yourself this question - why does your rival game matter to YOU? Do you like kicking Florida's arse because if gives you a shot at the playoff? Or do you like kicking Florida's arse because it's Florida?

Sure, there are some shitty teams that will make a 24-team playoff, but there are also teams that are really good at the end of the season who dropped a couple early on that they shouldn't have - they'll make the playoff now. After the first round, however they structure this, you'll end up with 12-16 competitive teams, imo.

This doesn't improve the sport. Look how many uncompetitive games the playoff already has until they fix the teams that get in, adding more teams doesn't fix that, it makes it worse. And now you are damaging the regular season and taking away the Conference Championship games because they no longer matter.

That doesn't improve the sport. Don't be fooled by what other leagues do, this decision was made too quickly and only for $$.

I think for most people it’s the idea that it will lessen the importance of the regular season.

I disagree with that, but that’s what I hear the most.

I’m honestly for it if it means no more conference championships. They haven’t mattered for awhile.

I think expanding the playoff is the “easy” fix to a much larger problem. And also a money grab.

Because this isn’t college football. This is minor league football. The sport many of us fell in love with is no longer here.
College football was most exciting whenever you couldn’t afford more than one loss in a season.

The regular season will hold no meaning anymore. Which makes the sport great.

Historic rivalries like lsu/bama that usually are a must win situation for atleast one side, will be meaningless. This will kill the sport. The importance of the regular season is the only thing it really has left.

And when you could watch a freshman come in and grow into a beast by year 3.

Now it’s an entirely new roster year in and year out. CFB is buns now

Oh yeah let me tell you just how “exciting” this place was and how excited we were when weaker teams with weak schedules got in over 2-3 loss SEC teams. Screw all that.

I have been wanting to go to 24 teams for a long time. The conference championship dose not matter and it wasn't fair when one team had to play in the conference championship (with a loss would not make it into the playoff) while the 3rd place team got a game off for players to recover from the long season and was in the playoffs automatically.

With 24, LSU should be in the playoffs every year and you those playoff games in Death Valley will be awesome!

Could yall imagine traveling to the big house or Boise for a playoff game or Ohio State coming here for a playoff game?? Its going to be electric!

Also, since going to 12 teams, how many SEC teams should have made it in but didnt because of a Tulane etc that deserved to be there?? Vanderbilt last year should have been in it. With 24 teams, all of the good SEC teams will make it in and will show the rest of the college football world that we have the best teams top to bottom.

I can almost guarantee you that the same people you see being mad about this were also mad dating all the way back to the bowl days.

We used to live in a world where #1 Ohio St. would play #13 USC in the Rose Bowl, while #2 Alabama played #8 Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, and #3 Miami played #17 Boise State in the Orange Bowl. And we somehow had to guess a national champion after all of them played.

Then we improved on that, by bringing in the BCS. People complained about that because it was computers ranking teams, and they always didn't agree with who should be #2, and who should be #3.

Then we moved to 4 teams, and you had a year where a 12-0 ACC champ was left out because their QB got injured.

Then we moved to where we are today. I think it's fine, and wouldn't have been mad with it staying where it was (with some adjustments).

I am also perfectly fine moving to 24, as long as they do it correctly. Either no automatic qualifiers for group of 5, or one at max. If we get it to where it's actually the best 24 teams, then it should provide some solid match ups. I don't really understand why people would complain about playoff games on home fields. More good match ups. It all sounds wonderful to me, and I can't wait for it.

But a lot of the people who complain, just simply like to complain. They will literally find anything to cry about.

Why stop at 24? Why not 32? Why not 40? Why not 64 like basketball?

Our mindsets will adjust over time if this format stays for a while, but the nostalgic feeling that most of us have from this level of football has always been that everyone is chasing perfection. Of course, everyone is still chasing that, but it's no longer a necessary requirement in order to potentially win a national championship.

The 24-team playoff will still be plenty of fun. For people complaining about someone that's #24 in the country having a chance at a national championship, consider what that team would have to do in order to win it:

1. Beat the #9 team on the road
2. Beat the #8 team on the road (I'm really hoping the 2nd round is at home stadiums, but I doubt it unfortunately)
3. Beat the #1 team
4. Beat the #4 or #5 team
5. Win the National Championship (against whoever but likely the #2 or #3 team)

If there's ever a team in that #17-24 range that makes a run to a natty, they will have very much earned their spot by going through such a gauntlet. It will all play itself out.

You are making guarantees on assumptions. I am guessing you are incorrect. There are varied reasons why some like or dislike this.

I don't like it. I prefer a smaller number of playoffs to balance the meaning of each game during the regular season and and would prefer an 8 team playoff. I would never go higher than 16.

whether it be 8, 12, 14, 24 etc, my biggest issue with the playoffs in CFB is their way of determining WHO gets in. thats why you'll see more blowouts than we should. run the BCS calculator till it spits out the top XXXXX teams, then go at it. but making sure Tulane and James Madison gets in is my biggest issue..........human error/corruption/influence.
