Fans who love their teams will still be excited to see their teams play week after week.If their teams lose they will bitch all week want the coaches fired and the QB benched. The same thing will happen in a 24 team playoff, they will be excited to see their teams play whether they can win it all or not,and be pissed if they lose.Thats fandom.

Just too much football. When would the championship game be… early February?

I've gone on record several times saying my preference was the pre-BCS format, including those conferences that existed back then.
A bunch of 10-12 team conferences (or maybe as low as 8), all tied to a major bowl. Conference champs go to said bowl to play at-large teams, unless it's the Rose Bowl where the Big 10 and Pac 10 square off.
And frick the rankings. There's well over 100 teams, you don't really know if say Ohio State, Alabama, USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State, Notre Dame, Miami, Georgia Tech etc was the best. What you hoped for was a matchup vs a GOOD team, and to beat them in that bowl.
That all went away with the BCS manipulating things, and the playoffs are just the evolution of it.
What sucks the most to me is how the season now ends. In the bowl era, if you had 30 bowls, you had 30 fanbases that finished the year happy. They won their bowl. And then probably another 10-15 that were happy to make said bowl, even if they lost (LSU used to be in that position, when it made the Sugar or Orange).
Regarding the regular season and whether it "matters"- it stopped mattering years ago. Alabama has 2 national titles in seasons they didn't win the SEC, or even make the championship. Florida State went 13-0 and was left out of the playoffs, while a pair of 1 loss teams got in. That was pure politics- Alabama won the SEC at 12-1, and they damn sure wouldn't leave the SEC champ (particularly Saban's Bama) out. That team lost it's only game to Texas, so how to justify taking Bama over Texas? Simple, they did some mental gymnastics, took them both, and dropped FSU completely. Which was bullshite.
Miami didn't even make the ACC Championship last year, but they were the only ACC team to get in. And they almost won it all.
The expanded playoffs isn't going to make it any worse, it just eliminates the bowls for any team in the top 20. They still get a postseason game, they just get a chance to advance too. And while you get some more scrubs in, you almost certainly will be able to get ALL the teams capable of winning out. Since we're so fixated on naming a champ now, that's the best way to do it.
