no but i remember the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras where one of the racing series thought it would be a good idea to have their cars run a street race in New Orleans.

I think it lasted 2 years, but yes, the streets were the issue.

If I remember right wasn't it real deep to straight away center field? Like 420-430 feet?

421 to center

During renovations, they released a hypothetical baseball configuration, but if I remember correctly they scrapped it and Dome is no longer setup to convert to baseball.

Looks like it would have been a very nice setup too.

Some local high school teams got to play games in the Dome, including my alma mater, and there were pre-season MLB games. I saw Mark McGwire hit a line-drive homer to dead center against the World Champ Yankees.

I actually tried to rent the Superdome when they had it set up for baseball one Spring, so my friends and I could play baseball games. My ambition at one point was to have a 24 hour continuous game to raise money for charity, beginning after the college challenge and playing all through the night. There were some men's leagues around the country that were doing the charity thing but I've forgotten which charity they were supporting. I did get UNO Field, and Zephyr Field and swimming pool a few times

It was actually the weenies' female A.D .who tried to pressure Skip for a bigger share of the Classic's revenue. The same A.D. who was subsequently fired for having a relationship with a female athlete .Skip just showed her a printout of ticket sales for each game & all the LSU game's attendances almost doubled those involving the weenies & UNO. She pushed him several times & finally Skip told her to take a walk, as LSU makes more in a 3 game series in The Box then it does in The Classic.

Those were the best times. When Tulane was good I loved that rivalry.

Went one year and sat in front of Ben McDonald’s parents. I got a foul ball and they brought me down to the locker room to get Ben to autograph it. Still have that ball in my office.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid are of the Winn Dixie Showdown in the Dome with my dad and grandpa. Especially the years when it came down to the final game as to which state would win overall. Great years playing the Florida Texas Oklahoma and Mississippi schools. I would give anything to be able to go back to those days!

I think you're mixing up a few games in your memories.

McGwire never played against the Yanks in Superdome.
and Yanks never played there in a year they were defending champs.

The environment for baseball was a little weird. In addition to being sterile, I remember a mammoth opposite field HR by a Tiger lefty whose name evades me, hitting the concrete floor beyond the fence and bouncing like a super ball 20 feet in the air. However, the quality of the competition, proximity to where I work and—this is big—the immunity to foul weather made for something I will always miss.

It was originally named the Busch Challenge. Then college sports teams/events could not be sponsored by an alcohol and/or tobacco company. So it was renamed the Winn Dixie Showdown.

Was Zephyrs attendance that bad?

Z’s attendance was fine

Changing name to Baby Cakes was part of the problem with the crap ownership after Rob Couhig left, crap ownership destroyed the entire game experience and attendance collapsed.

saw the Yankees and Orioles in the 'dome in 1980, not a very well suited venue for baseball, to be generous

Went to several, also believe the superdome hosted the SEC tournament one year. I remember skip getting tossed….i think it was one of only 3 times he got tossed in his career. The other I was at was against Long Beach St in a regional I believe.

I am. I went to all of them. I looked forward to it every year.

They are ancient history. New Orleans doesn’t even have a baseball stadium that could host an event like that anymore.

The Superdome and Zephyr Stadium are no longer set up for baseball.
