quote:That 2011 Defense was as good as I've seen. Simply criminal it was paired with the QB system/coaching at the time. I'm confident a lot of LSU fans have said, "just a smidgen of help from the offense... & that defense would have been referenced to as one of the best LSU defenses to take the field."
He'll always get a lot of hate because of the terms in which he departed, but he is definitely the most underrated DC we've had since I've been alive. (Most of) His defenses at LSU were stellar.

He gets a lot of hate because he had an unnecessarily conservative, vanilla scheme that wasted a ton of DE talent, was boring to watch, and he made shite personnel decisions IE starting Welter over Beckwith.
I called his failure when he went to A&M, he was a huge beneficiary of Miles’ ball control philosophy because he was giving up almost 4.5 yards per play which was bottom half of the SEC, they just weren’t on the field enough to give up a ton of total yards or points. He doesn’t belong anywhere near the conversation of best DC’s at LSU, everyone saw what happened at A&M when he was working with a normal offense- completely exposed him.

Where is he the DC now?
He’s the defensive passing game coordinator for the Vikings.
Maybe he wasn’t ready to be a DC at the time, but his short tenure was marred by a lame duck head coach and a team that checked out too.

Saban/Mus - check the numbers. They held most teams to under 280 yrds tot off

Arnsparger or Saban and whoever their DCs were.

The name is Tepper…..Lou Tepper. He forgot more about defensive football than he ever knew, and that’s saying something.
He did coach the most complete linebacking unit that we have ever seen.

2007 Kentucky and Arkansas would like a word.
Kentucky was after arguably the most emotionally draining game in Tiger Stadium history against Florida. That team was cooked against anyone the week they played Kentucky. This was the near the beginning of peak "SEC Hangover" days, legitimately having games affecting the next week's match-up for teams.
As for Arky, there were 13 NFL players on that roster, chief among them Darren McFadden and Felix Jones. Nobody stopped those guys. They ran riot over the entire SEC.
Point is, Those two games were VERY situational, and not at all representative of Bo Pelini's overall time as DC (v1.0, of course).

I say Saban and Arnsparger were the best defensive minds
Arnsparger and Aranda were better defensive coaches than Saban. Saban was far better at acquiring talent. If the criteria is simply who had the best defense, than sure, Saban. Saban won with process, not with coaching virtuosity.

I'm saying who was the leader of some of the best defenses in LSU history. Sometimes is takes better talent, but that talent also needs to be coached up to play in the scheme as one. You can blow on Chief, but that 2010/2011 defense was one of the best in program history.

The last two years of Arnsparger, the DC was Mike Archer and Saban had a first year DC in each of his first 3 seasons with Muschamp the final 3 seasons.

Then it’s Saban. You can discount anything before the 1980’s, because the game was defensive by nature.

Completely overrated
yeah finishing top 3 in the country in total defense every year he was here was horrible.

"Process", its implementation and administration IS coaching virtuosity.
