If we were looking for a program changer, Curt Cignetti is the obvious choice but no one knew who he was at the time.

Hard to say, but on paper BK was a great hire at the time.

I get that Lane/Ole Miss are having a great year but to act like our last 4 years wouldve been completely different is some real fomo shite. Before this year Kiffin has been thought of as the guy that will always blow a game he should win to keep him out the playoffs.

Kiffin at Ole Miss
5-5
10-3
8-5
11-2
10-3

Kelly at LSU
10-4
10-3
9-4

Kelly was a mistake, but Kiffin isnt the best hire we couldve made over him. It looks great peeking at the neighbors yard now but the rant wouldve melted and wanted him fired after the undefeated loss at home to Kentucky last year.

Lanning is a good answer.

Lane is hindsight. Thats always easier though. Bk looked good on paper.

Hindsight for some….there were others of us who were calling for Lane…had just come out of the Saban Rehab Clinic and looked ready

Dan Lanning was hired by Oregon
Mike Elko was hired by Duke
Kalen DeBoer was hired by Washington Brent Venables was hired by Oklahoma Marcus Freeman was promoted by ND Sonny Dykes was hired by TCU
Rhett Lashlee was hired by SMU
Joey McGuire was hired by Texas Tech I’m not including Cristobal because LSU was never going to beat out Miami.

If any name on that list had been hired in 2021, this place would have been apoplectic. The shouts of, “Woody can’t get anybody good so he took a gamble on a no name coach” would have reverberated from the mountain tops (if we had mountains).

So should we go after another home run hire as we like to say or a proven coordinator or lesser coach with something to prove?

Because BK was considered a homerun hire at the time.

Kelly was the right hire at that time. Needed to stabilize the program. We were sinking fast and he patched the holes. Just couldn’t (or wouldn’t) pump the water out. Now we need someone to come fix the engine and drive it.

The guy loved playing with young women and using deceit to do it.

O’s naked in bed pics with some mid grade wasn’t going to make anyone fond of hiring another pussy hound, particularly after the scandals of Guice and others that the athletic department tried to cover up.

No sane decision maker was going to roll the dice on Lane. He needed more time to prove his focus and ability to make mature decisions.

Brian Kelly was an absolute homerun hire when it occurred.

I'm tired of reading this shite. No it wasn't unless you count winning the press conference a homerun hire. Hiring the guy that appeases the fanbase is not a homerun. Elko or Lanning would've been homeruns, the rant just didn't know it. I know it's not always easy to find those guys but the AD gets paid to do that and should know better than the rant. But of course they will probably take the easy route again and go after Lane bc its a "homerun" to the rant.

A homerun would've been Kevin O'Connell. He hadn't had any HC offers up to that point in his career. But he wasn't on Woodwards radar bc he didn't have HC experience. Yea it would've been risky, but that's a homerun. Not the obvious safe name to win the press conference

This. After the way O crashed out with his midlife crisis, we were always going to go after an older, mature, business-oriented family man.

I think 40 year old Brian Kelly would have had success at LSU. I think he checked out after 2023.

IF I remember correctly, I don't think Lane wanted to be the guy to replace his friend who had just been fired.

Thinking we’re too good for whomever is costly. Have an open mind and have a broad interview process that is more inclusive than exclusive.

Well look at us now. Should’ve taken the risk.
