The talent's always been there. To me it always screamed development and strength and conditioning.

He didn't replace Brad Davis as soon as he stepped on to the LSU campus and he didn't continue recruiting Notre Dame "Thor" OL's.

The o line has been bad for years as far as run blocking. There is a reason why Jayden Daniels had so many rushing yards. When your QB has more rushing yards than the running backs, there is a problem.

Kelly recruited all Tackles and made some of them guards.Thats why his guards can't generate a push in the run game, but they can pass block.

Les recruited all guards and made some of them tackles, but this worked because of his run heavy scheme.

At the time Thompson's signing with LSU was announced, this board seemed happy to procure an experienced OL to help this team. He was believed to be talented and a solid signee.

But along with the other OL recruits, redshirts, etc., Thompson struggled. I think it was the combination of lackluster coaching by Davis, a poor job of monitoring that position group by Kelly, and perhaps Thompson taking for granted that given his experience and the players lost from the previous season, he could coast and secure his starting job.

And with the amount of turnover every year from players entering the portal, it’s almost impossible to keep any continuity on the line and gel as a group when you are having to try and replace 2-3 starters every year because big boy wants a bigger payday.

First, in my opinion, in the north east there’s more to choose from, but he swung and missed in his evaluating many times, plus the coaching and development was terrible.

Glad he’s gone, he would do better in that part of the country

unpadded camps

I do like the unpadded one on one drills for the OL at the ALL_star games when the coaches really let them go at it.
You can really see their foot speed/upper body strength and if they can handle a speed/bull rush against top dlinemen in country . Have seen some really top rated OL struggle when they get against elite guys in all-star camp. For the casual fans who usually only get the highlight clip of player then you probably think not good gage but for coaches watching player all week with many reps you have an idea of what you will be working with.

The reasons why Kelly's offensive line failed here are simple: the offensive scheme went to hell when Denbrock left, talent evaluation has been poor, the early exits of Campbell, Jones, and Taylor, the presence of too many recruiters as opposed to skilled coaches on the offensive staff, and finally BK lost his enthusiasm for the game.

Our OL hasn’t been good since 2019. JD5 papered over all the cracks in the OL in ‘22-‘23. Since then our run game is pretty much nonexistent.

The downside is these d lineman will take their shirt off, be covered in sweat, and your hands slip right off and you never get to use your power. Establishing your hands is incredibly important.

No explosion at the point of contact
Everyone played “tall” instead of low
Mentally soft

These are all coachabke and correctable. The problem is no one corrected them at any point from the HC on down.

Kelly wasnt hungry enough. He came to LSU to collect his retirement pension.

Every single unit on offense struggled at some point during his time at LSU. Not just the Oline.

I can't name a team that's not somewhat disappointed with their Oline this year.
this is true. 2019 O Line won the Joe Moore award and many here still thought they sucked and gave all the credit to Burrow (??). Then several went on the play in the NFL.

But yeah our Oline was embarrassing this year.

Linemen being drafted does not equate to linemen being really good.

(See: Trevor Penning)

Seriously, though, go and watch their OL during Kelly’s tenure vs playoff teams, especially when Alabama skull-dragged them in the NC game several years ago.

As one of the posters earlier said, not many teams were happy about their line play this year. Probably a mixed bag of reasons. The NFL isn’t in the business of employing bad people, so my opinion was always that we had the talent, just couldn’t execute. That’s on coaching for sure, which is gonna boil down to Sloan and Davis.

A) lazy, no-accountability ethos
B) the whole blocking scheme is based off of RPO blocking, or way too much of it.
