I heard Skip tell the story about Del Rio. Skip went to see him but Jack’s contract would not allow the contact. They could see each other through the window of the building. JDR’s wife is from Louisiana and one of his daughter’s actually went to LSU. I’ve spoke to Jack at Mardi Gras time and think he would have been a good fit at LSU. We will never know.
I also think Bart Star would have been an outstanding replacement for Charlie Mac.

Les was, at minimum, acceptable.. and given the timing was consider a pretty good hire.

Then Les went and kicked arse his first couple years... 10-2 after 10-2 after 10-2 seasons.

That is my recollection as well but I wasn't on TD yet so I didn't have a board full of football geniuses to guide me back then.

Miles was a basement hire. Bertman was trying to save pennies

The school wound up paying drastically more than it should have for him "trying to save pennies."

Not only paying more for what they were getting in performance, but how much of it will also include lawsuits.

Whenever this is brought up, it reminds me of this quote from Spencer Hall on EDSBS:

quote:

The Osteen would not be the choice for a typical SEC coach. That would be the giant plastic earmuffs favored by Bear-itarians like Jackie Sherrill, and anyone else who understood that a red-blooded American football coach used the same headset their grandfather used to call in artillery strikes on the Japanese on Peleliu.

Jumbo Fisher was interviewed. He was the OC under Saban.

I'll never forget watching his introductory press conference. My jaw was on the floor.

This is the correct answer once Del Rio balked. Unfortunately Skip was a horrible administrator like many successful coaches who make the jump to AD (Ray Tanner, Phil Fulmer).

Jimbo quickly recognized Miles for what he was by the 2nd game when Miles tried to call a Timeout after an interception in the Tennessee debacle. Jimbo had to explain elementary rules of time management that proved to be a precursor of far more egregious lapses in judgement to come.

As soon as Steve Spurrier took the USCe job, he found out about the sanctions from NCAA, once said if he would’ve waited 3 weeks could have had LSU job.

I heard that rumor at our pregame tailgate. I asked about him being at USCe already. I was told he had not signed his contract at that point.

People seem to have less than 20/20 hindsight about Jimbo.

LSU fans wanted him fired on multiple occasions between 2003 and 2006 for some really poor offensive outings.

Yep

Hindsight is lacking and revisionist history abounds here at tRant. And it is brilliantly entertaining.

LSU fans the bed and wrecked Les because LSU fans go over the top with stupid like the Riverboat gambler and crazy Les and the "Hat".
Every time. LSU fans have this appetite (pun intended) for trying to take extreme and prove to the world we're better than God's gift... it's nauseating. Insecurity syndrome galore.
Memphis fan?

now do Clemson.

Like the time we had the #1 overall pick at qb with 2 first rd receivers and only scored 3 points at Auburn? Where if we score one frigging touchdown we play Florida in Atlanta for a shot to demolish Ohio State in consecutive championship games?

2006 was more of a missed title than 2011. 2006 was a more well rounded team overall.

Jock del rio was close to being hired

He had his kid looking at high schools to see where he could be qb.
His wife was looking at houses.

He was the guy but I heard he made decision to go elsewhere

The offense in the Sugar Bowl vs ND looked completely different, many people speculated that Todd Monken was running the offense since Jimbo had already accepted the FSU job. That season was fun in many ways but we’ll always wonder what could have been.

Also a lot of debate whether Saban was keeping him conservative because we were so dominant defensively. This was well before Saban revolved to spread acceptance in his early years at Bama.

Regardless, many LSU fans knew Jimbo would be a successful HC one day because of his QB whisperer prowess.

Revisionist history from some or not, I was definitely in favor of Jimbo once Del Rio fizzled. Skip didn’t want that risk and failed to evaluate the capability of Saban’s assistants.
