No they don't. Look at the players on this team likely to be drafted in the top 10 rounds of the mlb draft this year as compared to two and three years ago. This team is raw and young and the upper classman are just not that talented outside of Mahtook and Nola.

LSU wasn't great at the plate last year, not much if any improvement this year. For perspective for those thinking it takes a long time for talented freshmen to start producing and improve a current squad's performance this article is telling:

G Tech beats UGA again starting 5 freshmen

quote:

For the second time in about three weeks, Georgia Tech gave Georgia a nine-inning demonstration of the might of its heralded freshman class.

quote:

From the Bulldogs' vantage point in the first-base dugout, it could not have been a very encouraging presentation. Tech freshman pitcher Matthew Grimes overpowered Georgia, and freshman designated hitter Daniel Palka delivered a decisive two-run homer in the Yellow Jackets' 5-3 win over Georgia

quote:

Tech, ranked 12th in the country in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, improved to 25-9 and has won the past five against the Bulldogs. Georgia is 18-16.

quote:

"They've all contributed, done a great job for us," Tech coach Danny Hall said of his freshmen. "We've needed them."

quote:

Hall's freshmen appear prepared to extend the run. Last year, in the wake of losing seven underclassman starters to the draft, including first-round pick pitcher Deck McGuire, Hall reeled in 17 players. Of the class, rated as high as sixth in the country, five started Tuesday night.

Maybe LSU's recruiting class wasn't as good as pundits would have one believe. Maybe Hall is coaching his better. All I know is those guys are doing what it takes to win.

One big winning streak away from 4 losing SEC Regular Seasons in 5 years.

And when I say we are only about 6 pitches away from a 9-3 SEC record people call me crazy! An SEC record 23 game winning streak is still that...A WINNING STREAK...CPM did what he had to do to win when the team was spiraling downward.

quote:

As it stands now, he's on his way to his 3rd losing regular season in the SEC out of his 5 years. That's simply not acceptable. There's no arguing otherwise.

I hate to repeat myself but CPM is not Skip Bertman and never will be.

Give me the names of coaches that had to step into a program like LSU and were more successful than their GREAT predeccessors like Skip Bertman. Or give me the names of coaches that you think should replace CPM and could have us finishing with a winning record in the SEC, which has become the best conference in NCAA, every year. Winning a lot of games, especially with the new bats and in a tough SEC is not going to be easy for LSU anymore. We have to adjust. Why do you think Vandy is winning? They have always relied on pitching and the new bats just help bolster and already phenomenal pitching staff. Florida too!

Bottom line: Hang in there fans, CPM has something left in his magic box for the 2011 season. Hey, we swept Cal St Fullerton and look where they are right now. We have the tools all we need is a little luck!

Ok I might be mistaken here but weren't Ryan Schrimpf, Blake Dean, Jared Mitchel, Louis Coleman, Micah Gibbs, Sean Ochinko (maybe transferred from JC) and probably a couple others from Smokes days at LSU??? Those were the guys who carried LSU to the NC. Only Mikie Mahtook played a prominent roll on that NC team. So did he build a NC, or just coach one?

Not really. Dean, Schimpf, Ochinko and Coleman were all on Mainieri's first team. But players like Ranaudo, LeMahieu, Gibbs, Landry, Mahtook, Hanover, Nola and Ott who all played large roles on the 2009 team were recruited by Mainieri.

"LSU did not get a base hit the last four innings of the game and nine of the last 12 LSU hitters struck out against Mason Melotakis who had only struck out 14 batters all season before last night's game."

For what it is worth, if you go back and read PM's statements as the season was just about to begin he predicted that "runs will be hard to come by". He is an experienced coach and could see that we do not have a potent offensive lineup. Ironically, with our entire pitching staff turning over from last year with AR leaving and the rest getting Tommy John surgery I suspected we might get shelled every night (which is not happening). The lighter bats are keeping us in games but good teams find ways to win close games intead of losing them. The CSF sweep was a bit of a bait-and-switch, our expectations falsely raised and now we're getting punched in the gut. Losing to a 10-22 Northwestern team? Wow.

if a guy who has a big stick can provide an extra run or two a game for you. lsu would have won five more games this year.

u.g.a. loss by 1 run.
florida- two of the losses by 1 run.

simple enough for you, now?
arkansas-two of the losses by 1 run.

that's not including the other 1 run loss. princeton.

Big stick would help, but even a singles guy getting timely hits with RISP could have made a huge impact. One has to give the opponent some credit in these situations, but it seems like there are multiple opportunities in most games that are aborted due to bad at bats. Combined with multiple costly errors in games where the pitching was great =

Ah well, maybe the tide turns the next series.

Of course any team would love to have a Blake Dean in their line up.

My point is you don't know that your "missing link" would be up to bat with runners in scoring position in those games that we lost by 1 or 2. You also dont know that your Superman would even hit the ball in those specific scenarios.

We all agree that if things had been better we would have won. But to put a blanket statement that if we had "X" in those games, that we would have won....you just don't know.

I have read back on your posts and you are a self-proclaimed know-it-all about anything LSU. I'm all for fans but its posters like you that I consider more "posers" than posters.

I think PM's biggest flaw is his loyalty to shitty assistants. Some of those guys have to go. Javi never struck me as a good coach even when we were winning.

a big reason runs have been hard to come by is bunting early in the game with your best hitters to move runners into scoring position. He's killed many potential big innings by doing this

Exactly. I think Coach Manieri psyched himself out with the new bats - so much so that he de-emphasized offense and overemphasized sac bunts. Well sac bunts are ok for manufacturing one run innings. They pretty much destroy your chance of putting up crooked numbers.

And look at our recent "offensive production" - yesterday: a 2 run homer. Sunday: a grand slam. That's it. We're playing small ball and bunting and it's not working.

If I were Mainieri, I'd consider going to lineup similar to early in the season to give LSU a chance of producing runs, contingent on Watkins producing.

A lineup like

LF Watkins/Ware
3B Hanover
DH Rhymes
CF Mahtook
SS Nola
RF Katz
C Ross
1B Edward/Lowery/Eades
2B J Jones

With Lowery getting more chances when he gets back, Edward is at least decent at the plate. Also letting Watkins go for a few games, then Ware for a few games to see if either can get us going. If Watkins learns to hit again, that lineup can produce.

Ok I stand corrected, and I understand they were all freshmen on PM's first team, and he coached them up to what they became, but weren't they all, or at least most signed during the previous season?? Like during early signing period?

Well yesterday in the first inning there was the Keystone Kops move where the guy on first base steals while the guy on second stays put. That's a potential run scoring situation wasted.

Then in the second we were caught stealing.

There was a sac bunt just before Rhyme's homer (definition of a wasted out) and another caught stealing right after the homer. In other words, NW only "earned" one out in that inning - the other two, we gave them.

In the later innings we didn't bunt because we never had anyone on base. If they'd have tried to bunt they'd probably have missed it.

not sure what you are trying to get at. Recruiting hasn't exactly been a huge problem with PM at LSU.

Maybe this year we are a little thin with depth for position players, but we expected at least Marcus Davis and Lucas Leblanc to be here. Maybe more out of Ware, who is pretty much been a waste of a roster spot. Almost sure we would have 1 of those first 2 guys mentioned. And he probably thought a good shot to get both on campus.
