It's not.
1981, and not even close.

I've been an LSU fb and hoops fan since 1978, and to me the 1981 team is clearly the best we have had. If Rudy Macklin had been close to 100%, we win the natty that year. Anyone who watched that year knew LSU was the best when healthy.

quote:With all due respect to Brady's best team, 81 would have mauled them. That team had everything except a legit 7 ft center (Cook was 6'9 I think). If Rudy stays healthy, I think it's 50/50 we win the national title that year.
The correct answer is 1981. It had not occurred to me that this was debatable.
This team is up there...but couldn't touch the 06 team imo...
People just aren't old enough to remember them; it's a team that would put up 80, 90 pts without a shot clock or 3 pt line. Think about that a moment- no rush to get off a shot, you can take your time to get a high percentage look, no reward for a long jumper (and Carter made A LOT of them)- and still outscore today's teams.

Dude, any team that had shaq on it with Chris Jackson and the other talent surrounding him is the best team in LSU history. How the hell could you honestly believe any other way? Shaq would have completely dominated big baby and it would have been that way the entire game. Lol, it's not even a debate. That team with sharp and Chris Jackson was the best team LSU has ever had.

I've clearly been outvoted here.
Weird thing is I was a LSU student in 1981. Went to a ton of games and loved it.
Call me hardheaded or whatever, but still think the 2006 team was the best ever...ducks to avoid the incoming...lol

I cannot agree. Reason is because that team had not played together but one season. They were a very talented group but not a close or very experienced TEAM. If they had played another season together, I'd agree, but were not a cohesive unit. They were very good individually, but not as a whole. When they played together as a team, they were nearly unstoppable, but they just were not seasoned enough to play team basketball on a consistent basis. It's close between the 2, IMO. And I do think the 2006 team was good, as was the 1986 team. But over an entire season, playing against the same competition, the 1981 team wins more games and goes further in the NCAA than any of the others.

1980-81 team
Back count was E and Hi C
Front line Mac, Cookie and Swat.
Not a little better than 2006, much better.

Terrible post. You’re combining several LSU teams

1981 was hands down the best LSU team ever. Not even debatable.
I love the OP’s, “with respect to the Shaq, CJ, Roberts team”. Buddy, that team isn’t even top five. They were probably about tied with 1981 for talent, but they were not a top 20 team in performance.

1981 for sure, super sub Willie Sims would have started on all other teams.
