Kelly’s defense is shite, that’s why. I know fans are going to say we changed coordinators but the defense hasn’t changed, Baker is just better at calling Kelly’s D than House was. How many coordinators will we burn through until pressure is put on the HC to give guys autonomy?

Yikes

Ehhh it’s stating to come together at safety too. We jus got the no.1 safety out of Louisiana in the 25 class in jhase Thomas , another 4 star safety cj jimcolly, we’re the favorites to get the no.1 safety in the country for 26 in Blaine Bradford

There were many vacancies on the roster when BK arrived. He did a commendable job of filling them in year 1. Major props. But this thread is about one position (two players) - safety.

He's had three years to find 2 players. Presumably, since the roster was so depleted there would've been an attractive sell to recruits.

LaRon played a as true Fr
Chad Jones played as a true Fr
Reid and Tyrann played as true Fr
Jamal played as a true Fr
Delpit played as a true Fr

Saban, Miles, and O all played true Fr at safety successfully. Wy can't BK? Either he didn't know how to assess talent or he didn't know how to recruit it.

The man saved us from the depths of football roster hell in a way that not many coaches have the bandwidth to do.

Bandwidth? He had 31 years of HC experience (now 34). That's 2X more than the previous three HCs combined when they were hired. He was given a 10Y contract. He does not get the luxury of making rookie mistakes. He was expected to have a vision, a plan, and the wherewithal to execute it. No excuses.

Reading the BK apologists is wearisome. At this point, he just needs to win the games.

Dont they have the #1 safety recruit in this coming draft? Hopefully this helps solve those problems.

Look to OP, not me.

You dig into the weeds, this 2025 team is built stouter than our last few. We're at a point where we're able to build some depth upon prior classes and lean into the portal, not for emergency needs, but for impact starters and future starters.

Being able to stack blue chips looking out 3 years is a thing of the past. From now on, the best coaches will be able to recruit players who will start as redshirt freshman and transfers who will fill the gaps.

The best coaches will also be able to build a structure and culture that those players will be able to thrive in. We placed a $100m bet on Kelly being that guy.

Agree. It's a new era.

BK had a very, very strong recruiting class. I would hope it would all stick. But in reality, about half will have transferred out by year 2 if they aren't playing.

LSU had at least 50 scholarship players when BK took over. Which is close to what LsU has after this season.

I’ve done a count before and it’s something in the low 40s and it includes a lot of guys who transferred the next year or were never good.

Recounted it at 45 which includes Jared Smalls, Nick Storz and Jack Mashburn who I think got scholarships but likely wouldn’t have if the roster wasn’t a mess in 21 and 22.

of that 45, 16 transfered the next season.

but there were certain positions that were really bad off

DBs on roster were Todd Harris, Jay Ward, Burns, Ryan, Raydarious Jones, Langolais and Demarious McGhee.

Marcus Freeman was supposed to be our DC when BK was hired. He specializes in safeties and would have solidified the position within a year or 2. If he had come with Bk, we would be playing OSU next week. Instead, in yr 3 we are starting over. Freeman not coming is bigger than anyone realizes and set us back 3 or 4 years on defense. We still aren't worth a crap on D

We’ve played freshmen at safety. We haven’t started many freshman at safety; but to that point, here’s how many games the guys you listed started at safety during their freshman seasons:

Grant Delpit: 10
LaRon Landry: 9
Eric Reid: 3
Jamal Adams: 2
Chad Jones: 0
Tyrann Mathieu: 0

For reference, Dashawn Spears started 3 games at safety in 2024 as a true freshman.

It’s more than the safeties can’t cover well. They also have real trouble doing simple things well - like tackle. Almost like they refuse to do it.

This is exactly it.

Saban talked briefly about how he treated safety as important as the QB position, even more so, prior to one of the semis. Was referring to Downs in that instance, I think.

LA should have all the WRs and DBs necessary to field a championship caliber team. But when you talk about culture, a big epidemic problem I see is that DBs put no priority on tackling. They repetitively try to knock ball carriers down without using their arms.

They all treat their position like Deion Sanders. If you got the ball, F it, I'm out

I heard a coach in an interview refer to this as “playing FITball”, instead of playing FOOTball.

Major Burns and Sage Ryan, God bless them, were not very good. We have new players coming in now.
