What are your thoughts on why LSU has struggled and continues to struggle at safety.

LSU used to be really strong at the safety position. Many AA, but we can't even seem to get AA type players to come to LSU anymore.
Is it because we don't have a dynamic safety coach or what?
I'm perplexed on why we are struggling so bad. Who was the last really good safety at LSU?

shite timing more than anything else.

When there were a bunch of safeties available, LSU didn’t have shite for NIL.

Now that LSU has the cash, there aren’t many safeties available.

We were great at safety in Kelly's first year. We had brooks, ward, foucha... and converse could play there when injuries popped up. You need players. Burn was lower rated recruit who was limited pass coverage, sage never developed and is essentially a bust for how highly rated he was.

Bad safeties mixed with bad corners and weak linebacker play. Last line of defense getting exposed on a team that had minimal strengths

Recruiting really went to crap for a while at DB. Things are improving at corner but still lagging at safety. If the coaches can bring in a couple of improvements at safety from the portal, then we may start signing better HS talent at the position going forward.

Coaching and/or culture. It’s more than the safeties can’t cover well. They also have real trouble doing simple things well - like tackle. Almost like they refuse to do it.

Sage Ryan is a “leader on the defense”? He’s been at LSU since 2020? How’d that happen? He doesn’t play that well. Maybe coaches couldn’t sit him, but leader on defense?

I think there’s an attitude on the defense that’s just not right.

Tired excuse...

It coaching development... look at all of these higher rated safeties (Thieneman, Poyser, Cooley, etc) in the portal from lower tier schools. You think money got them in the position their in now? Nobody heard of these guys until they put the work in on the field.

LSU has the talent. They just aren't doing shite with it.

Or maybe Greg Brooks?
He was the last decent S we had.

A lot of young dogs though that hopefully work out.

I wish we could have a pinned thread for referencing exactly how bare the cupboard was for Brian Kelly when he took over the roster.

37 scholarships (+\- 2, can’t remember exact number).

Out of a possible 85, we had 37.

We were a small-to-middle size high school team in terms of numbers. Limited talent, no depth at all, and poor prospects for recruiting at that time as one poster mentioned.

And Kelly then used his first move to clean house and get rid of attitudes he didn’t think were conducive to his vision for the program.

Kelly gets shite on hardcore, but he had a nearly impossible job. Sure, he over-promised when it came to how fast he could turn things around, but good grief man…

Our roster has vastly improved, recruiting has finally hit its stride, and there is serious talent on the team again.

We should be grateful for Kelly regardless of if he wins a Natty this year. The man saved us from the depths of football roster hell in a way that not many coaches have the bandwidth to do.

Need to let safeties coach go. Hire ST coach. Let CR coach all DBs so they work as a unit.

Can't hide a Safety anymore than one can hide a Qback. That said, LSU's defensive line play has been pedestrian and makes anemic secondary play more obvious

And 3 years later, you've got a depth chart that's starting to look more like 2018.

I'd feel a lot better if we could get a proven OT and safety, but besides that, this team should be thick enough to run through a 12 team playoff.

It is called the Matt House effect... Recruiting across the defensive board went to hell especially at safety.

Stop with the untruths.

LSU had at least 50 scholarship players when BK took over. Which is close to what LsU has after this season.

LSU had 39 scholarship players for the bowl game due to players not playing due to redshirts and discipline/academic reasons.

BK has been here 3 full seasons. Stop blaming others for his deficiencies.
