If it was nearly as popular as the media make it out to be then the tv contracts would reflect that. They dont, which is why WBB loses a shite ton of money.

And baseball even less so. Women's hoops has higher t.v. ratings and better attendance than college baseball. That's just a fact.

Sure, but at the same time it’s silly to pay a coach 3+ million dollars in a sport that losses so much money. Not every sport is going to make a profit, but you shouldn’t just throw money away either.

In the past, tv revenues were not shared with LSU WBB even though they had higher tv rating and higher attendance than MBB, Baseball, all other sports except FB. But this recently changed and LSU just started tv revenue sharing with WBB similar to MBB. It's performance-based and get bigger cut with Ncaa tournament participation. Last year MBB (14-18) received $6.8 million tv revenue share and WBB (31-6) received $0.
With the new 8-year $920 million ESPN deal, LSU WBB will start receiving its tv revenue share depending on tv viewership and success in Ncaa tournament. And LSU WBB players will also be compensated from tv revenue sharing, especially the top players will receive biggest payouts. This is separate from private NILs. So the top school brands like LSU (ranked #3/#4 brand) will receive biggest tv revenue payouts. This will have a major impact on recruiting. LSU WBB will finally start receiving its share of tv revenues.

How do you think that would help the baseball program? Do you think they aren’t getting the best baseball coaches available because of salaries? They can’t just use that money to pay players since it’s a separate pool of money. The revenue sharing budget cap remains the same regardless of coaching salaries.

The admins say that they will suspend me for saying similar things (especially for starting a thread like this), but they’ve never said that I can’t support the many, many other fans who will say what I would say if I were allowed to.

As much as I love Kim Mulkey and watching LSU women's. I agree the overall product of Women's Basketball is not great. There is just no parity. Its always UCONN and South Carolina and maybe another here and there.

Agreed. You don’t need a staff to teach someone to do a layup.

I agree with this and yes, most sports (men's and women's) are money losers, and that doesn't mean we should shut them down.

But it's also fair to point out the magnitude of the respective losses, particularly the outsized loss by WBB.

I don’t think baseball’s funding is the issue per se. it’s the money for roster funding. LSU baseball was second overall in spending via the athletic departments. I believe it was only second to Tennessee by a small margin.

However, when it comes to roster funding, we aren’t getting it done. It’s why we miss on the big name transfers the last few years. It’s also the rev share slice. Unfortunately for Jay his sport doesn’t garner the national attention that basketball and football do. Even women’s basketball is shoved in your face more than college baseball from a national perspective

I got zero issue with paying Kim. The positives she contributes to the brand and the excitement she brings to the game day experience is fine and worth what we are paying.

LOL. If that is your criteria then all we would have is football and MBB.

This point is made every.......single..........time one of these red pillers who hate women, make this weak argument that women's sports deserves bottom barrell treatment. Yet, these morons continue to try and argue that we should get rid of women's sports.

Listen guys (and ladies). LSU isn't a "for profit" business in the classic sense. It is a UNIVERSITY. They don't have sports to "just make a profit". If that were the case having ANY SPORTS other than footballl, doesn't make much sense.

What some of you all fail to realize is...................1) The LSU athletic adminstration could give a f$%ck what you all think of women's basketball. They are COMMITTED to being the best in that sport and investing in it as such. 2) Y'all need to stop trying to count LSU's money. They have accountants and administrators to do that. Just enjoy that our sports teams (men and women) are good. 3) No matter how many of these stupid threads about how much some of y'all hate women's sports are posted in this forum, the LSU athletic administration DOES NOT CARE. They will continue to pay Mulkey $3 million+ and they will continue to invest HEAVILY in the women's basketball program, period. So, stop wasting your time bellyaching about it.

All of the haters need to go tell Verge what a bad deal CKM and WBB are. All of the people dreaming of WBB getting whacked are clueless.

quote:

TIGER RAG: How do you justify losing approximately $8 million a year with women’s basketball?

AUSBERRY: You justify that because of what coach Kim Mulkey ($3.35 million a year salary) brings to LSU. The deficit for every major women’s basketball program in the country is about the same as that. South Carolina, all of them. South Carolina might be higher than ours. When you look at it, it’s one of the top sports. Title IX consequences on that, too. What Kim Mulkey brings to the table for us, we can’t buy. It’s priceless. Baseball doesn’t make a lot of money either. Jay is the highest paid college baseball coach in the country ($3.05 million a year), which is deserving. He’s not much in the black, or he’s right under, which is still a win. Because some baseball programs probably lose $5 or $6 million. What he does for LSU and its brand is very important. LSU baseball loses money because of his salary, because it’s so high. But it makes itself up, and we get close to it. So, that’s a win, because other baseball programs lose a few million a year. You’ve got to look at it as how close you are to that bottom line. So, if we didn’t have Kim Mulkey, we’d probably lose $11 million in women’s basketball.

TIGER RAG: What do you mean by that?

AUSBERRY: That’s season ticket sales. Kim fills the building. So bottom line, if she’s not there and you’re doing the same thing she’s doing exactly, that deficit number goes up. Same thing if we didn’t have Jay Johnson winning championships in baseball, that deficit number would go up. At least, Kim Mulkey fills that building. At least, all those corporate dollars are working, which we’re trying to calculate now in a study. How many times do you see our brand out there? Wherever Kim Mulkey goes or wherever LSU goes, that brand is so strong. So I’m talking to corporations, and that’s what they’re telling me. ‘We want to be part of LSU right now. Your brand is the strongest.” Even people who have given other schools around the country a lot of money, those corporations are saying, “Hey, we want a piece of LSU.” We’re one of the top three brands in the country. Kim Mulkey is part of that. Jay Johnson is part of that. Lane Kiffin is part of that. Our brand is so strong. That’s where the winning is taking place. Those are the people that people are attracted to.

Despite massive success and record-breaking attendance, the LSU women's basketball program operates with an annual deficit of roughly $8 million, driven by high operating expenses, including coaching salaries

When Mulkey retires at least LSU won’t be paying a WBB coach $3.35m a year.

Need the old bag to hang it up and hire someone on the “cheap” for $850,000.

So by your logic, getting rid of a championship coach for a coach on the cheap will save women's basketball $2MM a year, dropping the deficit from roughly $8MM to only a deficit of $6MM?
