re: Wade on risky roster building and prior regime: 'we can't be worse than what we've been'

The gist of this story is don't be so quick to paint Wade, Calapari, Self and others with the "he cheats" brush.
I mean, Self was literally implicated via text messages that became public offering 6 figures and Kansas had as many Level 1's as LSU and he gets next to no shite for it and sat out four games. It's laughable LSU and Wade get all the venom they do when there are many and varied examples everywhere of folks who have done as much or worse and folks just ignore and forget.

I had multiple conversations with MM. He’s a good dude, but was in over his head at LSU.

That was definitely a huge weakness of his, which is unfortunate as in this day and age at this level it just can't be. And he (McMahon) had zero interest in improving upon that, to his own demise.

And the other half is just awful coaching.
A sub .250 conference winning % over 4 years doesn't "just happen" because you have "no money"...which was a completely overrated narrative concocted by the former admin to justify keeping a coach with that dismal a record.
There is no personal animus against him. To everyone's knowledge he didn't do anything untoward at LSU. He was just a poor in-game coach which was exacerbated by the fact that he did not want to engage in the fundraising and negotiating efforts necessary to build a roster in this era. In other words, he was simply the wrong guy, at the wrong time, at the wrong place.
Those four years happened. They were a de facto death penalty for the program. It's just nice after that dark period to feel like there is a ray of hope for success even though no one is quite sure how bright that ray is at the moment.

He sucked as an actual coach though. That was much more important.

this is just speculation on your part, that the narrative was "concocted" you dont have the financial data.
I don't know the financials. but I know the players he got sucked. whether that was because he couldn't afford better or he made bad choices (I suspect both are true) is unknown.
I dont think a better coach could have done much better with those players. like will wade says, you have to have the players or coaching doesn't matter.

I think the players outside of his first season weren’t that bad. Many of them were desirable portal pieces that other P5 schools wanted.
He just did a terrible job of roster construction as a whole (worse than the sum of its parts), and was terrible at rotations and in game coaching.
You give a competent coach those rosters and we make the tournament at least 2/4 years imo.

Ah yes, the old trope of recruiting services and analysts only overvalued the players lsu actually signed the previous 4 years and no others.
You mediocrity lovers will never learn.

I don't know if anyone has the full financial data given NIL and record keeping speculative by nature.
However, the circumstantial evidence suggests the narrative was purposely concocted. First, NIL funding is used to build the roster in March/April through (outside of this offseason apparently) June. There are no free agent signings during the season. That means whatever NIL money was spent/committed was done so months before the start of the season. That would have been the case for every other team too. Therfore, if LSU was woefully deficient in spending relative to the rest of the conference that would have been known in October...if not before. Yet, there was nary a peep whatsoever about LSU spending little money.
That narrative did not manifest until late February, MONTHS after the NIL funds would have been committed to build the roster, at a time when LSU was 2-10 in the SEC and the season was already lost. The timing by itself was suspect. Then you looked to the source who "broke" the news. It was a person whose LSU media affiliation/specialty was coving football recruiting. It wasn't a basketball beat writer, or a national journalist whose area of focus was college basketball. It was football recruiting "specialist". Another oddity of the reporting of the "no money" narrative..until you realize that football recruiting specialist's wife worked in the LSU athletic department.
But here's what you didn't know at the time. The people who ultimately got Wade back to LSU were the same people who were pushing hard on the AD/President to fire McMahon and rehire Wade at the end of the 24-25 season. Something the AD and President refused to do. Fans saw the dismal results and the dismal 3 year record. They also saw Wade having great success at McNeese. Coming out and announcing McMahon would return for the 25-26 season despite his awful performance without anything more would not exactly be well received. That's why they had to announce it with something to "justify" the awful record and give the unhappy customer base reason for hope the future would be better.
THAT is why you got the narrative WHEN you got it. LSU wasn't woefully deficient in NIL spending. It just had a really bad coach the admin had already decided to keep because they didn't want to be pressured by boosters, politicians, and fans to hire the former HC they adamantly refused to hire.

The McMen still haven't come to the realization that the General is back. They are in a state of disbelief.

Careful Alt.
The Rant is full of simpletons that can't see the forest for the trees.
Anyone with decent deduction skills can use common sense AND life experience to get a good grasp of what's going/went on.
You're asking too much of a lot of these dudes to connect the dots-or even follow along while you or someone else does it for them.

It just depends on the transfers that are eligiblle and how quickly they adjust to playing with a new group of teammates.

Im just hoping to have a program with a pulse. The past few years have been a time of indifference. Honestly feels like the worst position for a program to be in. No excitement. Even if the press isn't "great guy energy" I'm happy to possibly be talked about.

It has gotta be brighter than the McMen quota of three wins/season. That was more than enough to sicken ... even the least squeamish.
