re: USC practically shut down our running game playing 2 high safeties all night

Yes it did but with good OL it shouldn’t matter too much. BC was hitting FSU up middle all game and getting yards. You break a team when you can run the middle.

Problem was Nuss wasn’t allowed to check out of plays when the looks were obvious.
I said this live to my wife.
I expect Nuss to be given more control at the line and also look for some wrinkles when that end crashes hard to the HB. Nuss is athletic enough to keep the ends honest. Still pissed that didn’t happen. But if they don’t want to do that seeing a WR or tight end hit the flat to combat that crash more often to keep them honest.

Emery had 10 carries for 61 yds
He should have gotten the ball 20 times. At minimum, he should have gotten the 5 carries Jackson had.

my oh my how we miss those effective bubble screens jimbo used to run a nd those effective jet sweeps matt canada used to run. throw in some real toss sweeps(not that short toss we saw albeit it was effective to a degree) and you would have a nice outside game to open up the middle and spread them out up front. when they move up to play all that you hit them behind them with passes. playcalling on down and distance and play type was dogshit.

if kelly does not let nuss audible after a pre snap read we are screwed. this has to change. hell the damn OC can read the D for him and send a call down. brady did this shite all the time with joe.

Why didn’t we run a RPO or any trick plays. Nothing else was working much in 2nd half.

Mix in a bubble screen which is basically a long hand off and get those guys running laterally on defense
We did this. It's like you people didn't watch the game. A quick bubble to Zavion Thomas for a pretty decent gain.

We ran one of the first play of the game. We also ran one on a 3rd and short opportunity but Nuss made the wrong read and didn't pull it and throw it to Taylor like he should have.

That does not bode well for our future games against legit SEC defensive lines.
Teams improve as the year goes on. No need to throw a wet blanket on the rest of the season.

That's also a different result with a more mobile qb. That being said, I thought Nuss was solid and was impressed by him.

They were also crashing the ends, and since we stayed in shotgun, it was very difficult to get started. IMO, we should have been under center a lot more.

LSU ran the ball 26 times for 117 yards that's a 4.5 average per carry

The last 4 National Championship QBs were not running threats, averaging around 15 yards a carry. It didn't seem to hurt Michigan, Georgia twice, and Alabama.
It was the predictability that got us in trouble...they were cheating up on first down late in the third and all of the fourth....and why not, BK told the world at halftime he wanted to establish the run game in the second half.
Also, there are plenty of short passing/flares to the rbs that work the same as a run, that we didn't try. I think BK just thought we have a great OL and we are just going to line up and run it down their throats...and when it didn't happen, he would not adjust and just kept doing the same thing. It was so much like Les Miles it was hard to watch. Make no mistake, this was BK's hands all over this.

You’re supposed to run a team out of that coverage and force them to bring another safety into the box. We could not. Offensive line play is not what it was supposed to be. That’s the most disappointing take away from the other night. That does not bode well for our future games against legit SEC defensive lines.
I am sure the running game strategy has passed me by but it seems strange to me that we try all this finesse shite rather than pounding down somebody’s throats. I noticed that many of our runs were off RPO’s so the line never advanced upfield and our QB never tucked it to make the D honest.
One play I saw on replay the OL was all facing backwards 2sec after the snap…

is this not the same as last year? Our RB's didn't do a ton running the ball, our running offense came from JD taking off when a pass play broke down or a QB option Have we actually shown we can run the ball with a RB?
We have not. Nothing is more apparent than our inability to pick up one-two yards when we need it. Look no further than our first TD against Mizzou last year. Seven times to crack in. Seven

Well, we had 117 yards rushing versus their 69. What hurt us most is when we were in short yardage where they loaded up the box. We need to be more aware and have formation options for those looks. They did that on a few crucial 3rd down pass plays as well.
Posted on 9/4/24 at 11:55 am to Mobiletiggah
The main problem was execution on those short yardage plays. Can't have a TE whiff on an easy cutoff block or have your QB make the wrong read on an RPO where the read is clear as day.

Well the staff was mainly letting him know the coverage and Joe would make the check. But yes Nuss needs to be given more control to change the play to what the defense is doing.

_________
Jackson is the best rb on the team. He had nowhere to go on the few chances he got.
Just heard Emery has another acl. We better hope Jackson is good
