Well that's one way to look at it. I guess we start from this previous Tuesday.

Financing Athletics Through Taxpayers (FATT) Tuesday it is.

It’s apples to oranges as it applies to the bigger picture. But when taking Landry’s
Comments about tax payer dollars into account, it’s certainly something to bring up and question.

I went back 3 years to make sure that the $16.5 million that the ULL athletic department received from the university in FY24 wasn’t an outlier.

Just seems odd to get your panties in a bunch publicly over an $8.9 million/year buyout at the only athletic program in the state that doesn’t use any taxpayer funding, in the name of fiscal responsibility, while your alma mater’s athletic department needs $16.5 million/year in taxpayer funds just to exist.

The point he's making is why would Landry pretend to be so upset about Kelly's contract buyout, which no tax payer will ever have to pay, if the state routinely provides almost $100 million/year to the other athletic departments of the state for them to all just lose money. If he's so concerned with fiscal responsibility, then those athletic programs should be shut down, right? He's pointing out that Landry doesn't actually give a frick; he's just creating a circus to get in the news and get his alleged political enemy fired from his job.

The ULL athletic department ran at a $12 million deficit in 2024, an $8 million deficit in 2023, and a $5 million deficit in 2022. Those deficits are after receiving over $16.5 million in direct institutional support - e.g. money from the university - each year.

Why has an anonymous message board poster figured this out but our local media hasn't? Too scared to ask the governor?

Landry didnt take office until Jan, 2024

Most of that was under JBE

It doesn't matter who the governor is, those schools have always gotten state funding and lose money. OP is pointing out Landry's hypocrisy.

2. Unlike UL-Lafayette, LSU’s athletic department does not receive any direct monetary support from the institution. In fact, LSU’s athletic department transferred $2.5 million back to the university last year.

The governor is a ULL fan. This is why he thinks the state is on the hook for contracts/buyouts - because that is how ULL works. LSU is not set up that way and he has no clue.

This is already possibly the greatest thread of the year. If a few more of the ULL fans flock in and make themselves look as foolish as the first time it will just get even better.

The LSU athletic department is entirely self-funded and has received a total of $0 in direct or indirect institutional support (“state money”) since at least 2004. It’s possible that the athletic department has been self-funded for much longer than that, but the school’s NCAA financial reports are only available from 2004-present.

Millions upon millions were invested by the taxpayer for over a century to support, nurture and grow LSU athletics…..just because LSU is “self funded” now, means nothing in comparison to the lump sum annuity handed to the university by the tax payers.

And we don’t want to crack the books and go line level because the use of assets at diminimis fee levels would make the biggest financial swindler blush.

This entire incident is going to shed light on deep crevasses of LSU and TAF that we don’t necessarily want for the state.

The common denominator that is missing is the attention to debt covenants that LSU and Louisiana must pay attention to - the buyout and the cab flow may not reconcile - leaving extreme exposure for the taxpayer to debt.

Everyone is so emotional right now - I feel like we are in the middle of a major college arms race bubble and Louisiana hold the needle to pop the whole thing wide open.

The idiotic statements and posts on this topic in this forum is mind blowing.

LSU athletics and TAF should be a source of pride for the state - let’s start acting like it. 95% of college athletic programs would kill to have Louisiana problems.

In this entire mess, Intrust LSU and TAF more than any other athletic institution…for sure.

of course it does

and why are you silent about the millions of taxpayer dollars that *are* being wasted on sports at these other schools?

No it’s just going to tank LSU, which I know is what some of you want.

Then where are all your threads about that? I see many talking about Louisiana Tech.

You’ve been exposed, time to leave, liar.

How many taxpayer dollars have been flushed down the toilet on LA Tech football this year?

Excellent point - but I am not - I have called for mass consolidation within the state and allocate those resource to LSU.

In Louisiana you need:

Louisiana State University
University of Louisiana Lafayette
LSU New Orleans
Louisiana Tech University

Everything else, demote to junior college and push all the savings to LSU.
