This tournament is meaningless. It only gives fans something to brag about if their team wins it.

Its for the fans.

It will be interesting to see what Jay does tomorrow if its 2-1 or 3-3 in the 5th inning and Anderson hits fifty pitches. I just dont think he is going to extend any of the pitching. We will see.

It’s meaningless.

2021 season is as positive proof anyone needs for how meaningless it is.

LSU and Georgia finish the regular season with identical records, both overall and SEC records. Both finish 13-17 in SEC play. LSU has a higher RPI at the end of regular season play. LSU plays Georgia in round 1 in a one and done game. Georgia beats LSU. Georgia gets a RPI boost for beating LSU and for playing two more games against high RPI teams. LSU gets into the NCAA tournament and Georgia sits at home.

Well in that case you’re right it certainly was meaningless, but you just never can be sure what the committee might do.

Only reason LSU was a national seed in 2014 is because they won the SEC tournament.

The discussion is pointless anyways because this season is like a normal weekend for LSU. They should be playing to win.

Why it can matter . . . .

Jolt Milam out of his slump
Give Cowan a chance to regain his rhythm
Give some arms an opportunity
Even the games with A&M and send them packing
Win a championship
Cement a nat'l seed (I think we're there already)

Maybe because it’s like that for football. You have to win that game in ATL to be the sec champ

Third reason: I want LSU playing well going into their regional. I want this team to get hot at the right time.

highly doubt it, if Kade pitches tomorrow, which he will,im sure, then we will pitch eyanson in game 2 if we make it. he's not going to pull out all the stops to win one game.

jay referenced pulling skenes early in a sec tourney game in 2023 when asked how he would approach the tournament. he also said he hadn't made up his mind who he will start tomorrow, but that's just gamesmanship imo.
he knew he was going to Kade when he said that

Win 2 games to guarantee, without question, a top 8 seed.

We could lose 50-0 to A&M and we’ll still be a top eight seed.

It’s nice that LSU would only play 3 games Friday through Sunday. People in the past say they want LSU lose quick so they don’t kill themselves playing 5 or 6 games in a weekend trying to win the tournament.

I’ve been giving this the same thought. From an effort perspective LSU can treat this as any other weekend series and not break up the rhythm.
The set up of this tournament seems IMO to be a do no harm policy. Teams in bad shape get to play each other and not compromise teams with something to lose. The best teams don’t play anyone until all their best arms have been used.
There is no arguing that the tournament design benefits all the SEC teams. It’s a do no harm format.
The fun of the tournament is completely gone. When every team plays in the first two days and every team plays twice it invites more fans. By the time LSU plays there are only 5 of 16 teams left in the tournament. It makes it way less festive. I’d like every team that goes to Hoover to stay for more than a cup of coffee.

Is the selection committee composed of the same people as in previous years, or are there different members who might place greater importance on certain factors as opposed to former selection committees?

For instance, is it possible that this committee places more emphasis on RPI than those in years past?

This season it’s a normal weekend for LSU. They can handle the tournament like a normal weekend without having to wear themselves out. You can play to win it.

There are a few new members this year but the majority are the same as the last few years. The chairman is the ex-baseball coach and current AD of Southeastern.

Winning the SEC tournament title is still a pretty cool thing.

Meh.

The shine is gone now that it’s single elimination and the top 4 don’t step onto the field until the quarter finals.

This looks great on paper. But its not reality.

After a brutal SEC schedule rest/treatment is probably more important than a tourny trophy. We have no idea whose arm is sore, we have no idea who is losing velocity because his arm is tired, we have no idea who is playing with nagging injuries. Just because they are 20, 21 years old doesnt mean they can play at a high level forever.

Here is what is important: Regional-Super-CWS.
