I disagree, at least as far as the power of their sound. They used to be MUCH louder.

Bring the band back under the control of the Athletic Department and watch what happens. The School of Music is what's killing them. They also need a qualified director. The guy they have now had never been a college band director prior to coming to LSU. He was supposed to be interim, but LSU never conducted a proper search for a replacement, so he's still there.

Agree. LSU needs to do a national search and spend money. I was in it from ‘94-96 and Wickes was strict but fare and expected excellence. We worked hard played hard. Trumpet line put on the best parties. I think they knew to add more bones and tubas. Do I think the band can get back to excellence? Yes, but will take time

I'm not sure what to really think, but I went to the Auburn game and our full band went too.

The daughter of one of my best friends goes there and she told us that our band was much louder than Auburn's and sits close to their band...

This. Had no idea so other college bands are so much larger than 325-member TGBFTL.

Aub & Texass bands are 380.

Aggy & U of I are 400.

N. Texas is at 435, unreal.

I was very surprised that the full band went to Auburn. Auburn's band director is an LSU Tiger Band alum and should've been at the top of the list when LSU replaced Roy King. The AU band is one of the best in the SEC.

Tiger Band's 325 members includes the Golden Girls and the color guard, so there are really only about 285 or so musicians. We have one of the smallest marching bands in the SEC. I believe that only Ole Miss and Vandy's bands have fewer members.

My niece goes to Allen High School. Allen is a suburb of Dallas. Their marching band has over 600 members.

Besides not playing Neck, has there been a decline?
Absolutely!

After Frank Wickes retired and Linda Moorhouse abruptly left for the University of Illinois, the "University of LSU" never conducted a nationwide search to interview interested individuals for the Head GBFTL Directorship.

Assistant Roy King was just moved up to the position. (Nice guy, qualified assistant, but not even close to being qualified to be the head Tiger Band director)

The School of Music (Todd Queen I assume and a few others) did conduct a weak arse search for a "Director of Bands" but that yielded one WA Damon Talley to head up the Symphonic Bands section of the Band Department.

After a few years of Mediocrity, Roy got in a little hot water and was released, then ULSU did the same thing again, promoting Assistant Dennis Ilinas to the top position.

After a few years of Ilinas, he left for the University of Oregon.

Here we go again. No interviews or search, just move up the Assistant.

Now it's Kelvin Jones.

Steady DECLINE from Roy, through Dennis and now Kelvin.

The band is too small to fill up 102, 000 seat Tiger Stadium and is weak in all-important Brass.

Half-time shows are mostly boring and unimaginative.

There's nothing there to hold your interest and keep you in your seat.

You can correlate the entire scenario to football. Wickes was Nick Saban. Moorhouse was Kim Mulkey. Roy was Curley Hallman. Dennis was Les Miles and Kelvin Jones is Willie Taggert.

The entire program has regressed, but can come back quickly with the hiring of another "College Marching Band Nick Saban" type director, but that will take a change in Leadership and most likely a move away from the School of Music and 100% into the Athletic Department.

Move it to the AD. Hire an Experienced and Proven Director. Let him hire a great Staff. Put all Band members on Athletic Scholarship. Increase size to 400. Eliminate Woodwinds and march just Brass and Percussion.

Tiger Band is a shell of its former self.

tDecline began in 2010 after they ran Linda out after Frank retired. Roy was able to sustain things for a couple of years like Smoke Laval after Skip Bertman but once Tiger Band got farther away from Linda running the show and "Roy's recruits" took over the decline happened fast.

Roy gets the boot and the School of Music finally gets their dirty hands on Tiger Band and a couple of yes men later and here we are.

Here is what really happened (as told to me by someone in the LSU athletic department)......
Frank retired and tried to get LSU to hire Linda as his replacement. LSU said "hell no" so Linda got mad and left. So, Roy became the director. Now here's the really important part......At the same time Frank retired (2010) and Roy became the GBFTL director, the school of music (with the help of Jane Cassidy /school of music faculty AND vice provost) took a scholarship package away from the band and gave it to the school of music. The removal/stealing of that band scholarship package accounted for more than two-thirds of the band's total scholarship money. That scholarship package paid ALL tuition for out-of-state band students! The fact that Roy somehow was able to maintain the band's numbers is nothing short of a miracle. Now, because of weak leadership, their recruiting efforts are quite suspect (poor instrumentation, poor talent, etc.). Now you know, the rest of the story!

I read that the sound quality suffered as the weather got cooler. The horns, trumpets, and tubas are harder to play in cold weather.

They sounded like total dog shite on TV for the Arkansas game. Yes playing in cold is more difficult but they should never sound like that

This has been the case for a long time......Prior to the current regime (Damon Talley), the LSU band was considered the BEST band in the SEC, although it was one of the smallest!

I have heard and read this stuff about Moorhouse before. What's the story with that? Was it simply that we had a some good ol' boys who didn't want a woman in charge?

You don’t have to have 400 members to produce great sound and volume but you have to understand that your marching band isn’t a concert band. Think of a drum and bugle corp. You will have to reduce the back half and increase brass and drums. I have always thought it silly to have so many clarinets and flutes that are truly never heard in that environment

Does Tiger Band have a lot more wood wind instruments than other college marching bands? It sure does look like it.
