I see people making comments on here. I haven't been to a game since 2015. They seem the same on TV. Besides not playing Neck, has there been a decline?

What happened to Tiger Band is a disgrace and I’m not sure they will ever return to their glory days

Seems like they don’t play “Hey baby” anymore or haven’t for a long time

Their halftime shows have been getting better and better. People complain about the DJ being louder and making it seem as if band isn’t as loud.

I think they sound fine but their marching has definitely gotten worse. I’ve seen tons of crooked lines, even in pregame, and even people wildly out of position at the beginning of a show.

Need to tighten that up a ton.

To answer your question- I have no idea.

But my son plays in Samford's marching band and the pandemic played havoc with marching bands in general; high schools didn't have marching bands for a season or two, so there are fewer high schoolers entering college with marching band experience and fewer younger kids who saw high school marching bands to get in the pipeline. The high school my son graduated from has a band about 1/2 the size of the pre-pandemic band. My son is one of the few non-music majors in his college marching band, so in his instance other than want-to-be band directors the band members just aren't there, so that's my opinion, based on one kids experience.

And, in my best old-man/get off my lawn voice, it appears to me that Gen Z kids generally just don't want to put in the work to both be able to play an instrument and march a show. Being a band kid doesn't really help your social standing, so it's a lot of work for little pay-off.

So if something specific is going on with Tiger Band on top of this? that's a bad situation.

The band is fine. The problem is the extremely loud piped In music.

I really hope this is a serious observation.

Band needs 24-32 more marching members, IMO.

Their halftime shows are good. By October, their marching lines are straight and in sync.

Band needs to be BIGGER, IMO.

No more Linda Moorhouse or Frank Wickes.

Quality declined.

I read that the sound quality suffered as the weather got cooler. The horns, trumpets, and tubas are harder to play in cold weather.

Just go watch some old highlight videos and listen to the band audio compared to some highlights from this year. It used to be much crisper

Here's my take on it....FYI I was a Tiger Band member from 1998 - 2002...basically the heyday of Roy and Linda.

I think under Moorhouse and Wickes (and King when he was there with them) the band was incredibly strict when it came to what music was played, how it was played, and marching in general. Moorhouse, Wickes, and King produced some outstanding marching units (several I was a part of) that tried to emulate a lot of the stuff that drum and bugle corps did. They were very good at getting in a lot of talent from that world and that talent was incredibly good and teaching that style to normies (basically band members that didn't come from the D&B corps and/or weren't music majors. I'm not real sure how it turned out as good as it did, but I do know that when I was out there I wanted to show I was just as damn good as those damn corps dudes so I stepped my game up. I suspect it was the same across the board....anywho it produced a lot of great unite like I said.

Then you get to the point where Linda left because she knew that without Wickes being around she was going to play second fiddle to somebody that didn't have nearly the marching band talent/acumen that she had. She also knew that she probably wouldn't ever be the head person at LSU so when Illinois came with that offer it was a no brainer.

So now you have Roy by himself running the show. This worked out well for a while basically while you still had a core of folks in the band that respected the Linda/Wickes way. If you really look at the end of Roy's tenure it seems like the discipline of the band fell off. Seeing that the powers that be came up with some BS and let Roy go. LSU eventually paid Roy and everyone was happy basically.

Now what came after that was the new regime in the SOM seems to have wanted a move away from that strict corps style. So it seems that LSU has went to is some kind of middle ground between corps style and HBCU style.....I don't think it is wonderful, but I'm not going to sit here and shite on kids that give up 8-12 hours of their week to entertain LSU fans at LSU football games.

1. Linda was passed over for main director and then left for Illinois.
2. They gave the job to an MA, Roy King who was then later fired
3. Damon Talley became director of bands without actually becoming director of TGBFTL
4. a rift grew between the school of music and the athletic department over control and money
5. Now they can't keep a talented director at the helm like Dr. Frank Wicks, the GOAT of band circles everywhere.
6. Inconsistency in leadership leads to inconsistency in numbers.
7. They changed the band uniforms.

..Roy was fired for misappropriating $5,000....that's it. That's what's in the HR IA and that's what LSU admitted to in the answer to his suit.

Also, LSU paid him handsomely to get out of that trial.

It's unreal what people can post about good people on here...I agree that ultimately Roy was in over his head when it came to the day to day of running Tiger Band

They are on scholarships and need to get food and not play the third quarter. They also don’t play with 6 min left in the first half due to going to the field for half time
