Sterile and dull
I think part of it is the lay out but I’d also venture to say it’s got an aging fan base that’s not necessarily bringing in new blood.
Other schools seem to be doing a better job of promoting bringing in the students and making it fun for them. Old boxistas would rather keep things civil so they can read poetics about what a smart and classy fan base they are.

and actually read poetry in the grand stands. Earlier this year I was sitting behind an old woman who was knitting, no shite.

My two cents:
The whole thing screams "minor league ballpark" when you first walk in, and that's mostly because of the stupid painted billboards that ring the outfield fence.
A lot of parks have adopted a "no color logos" policy on their outfield advertising. They have painted the fence green and advertisers can only use white lettering and logos. (Alex Box has that, but it's behind home plate and the dugouts...wtf?)
It changes the look of the ballpark almost instantly.
I don't like the metal bleachers down the lines, either. There's a lot that Woodward could do there, if so inclined.
And the hitting backdrop....Spectators at Alex Box get a view of the worst side of Tiger Stadium, the one that doesn't look like anything else on campus (the side that Woodward admits was a mistake when it was designed, what, 14 years ago?) .... Better to put in some trees around the backdrop. Something to give it a look better than the cheap vibe it sends out now.
Just my two cents.

Grand stand and club levels are really cool. That and the player amenities along with the reputation are what put it in those rankings.
The rest of the experience(the experience for the majority of fans) just isn’t very good. Here’s my list of what’s wrong:
1- parking and marching across Nicholson sucks.
2- concessions are bland microwaveable foods not tied to the culture
3- bleachers down the lines look like shite and are uncomfortable as hell
4- sight lines from said bleachers suck
5- outfield bleachers are ugly and even more uncomfortable
6- the intimidator is a billboard
7- atmosphere sucks due to the amount of foul ground coupled with corporate white washing of the whole experience
8- the stadium lacks any charm or character
9- bullpens on field
Other than that, it’s a great place
Frankly, after years of attending games in person I won’t go back unless I have a family member or close friend playing there.

For a culture as unique as Louisiana, it's the most bland, cookie-cutter stadium imaginable. From the design to the concessions and everything in between.
THIS!!!!
I’ve been to LaTech’s yard, Rice’s yard, The Tigue- all of which have more charm and character than the Box

The problem is the cheap bleachers down the lines and in the outfield.
I see this alot on this board. What does this have to do with atmosphere or making the stadium enjoyable? Chairbacks will drive up the cost of the tickets which is not good for everyone.

1) Get rid of cheap bleachers down the lines and in the OF
2) Have a party/deck where you can grill/drink with cool Tiger fans
3) Have a better selection of food and drink (I'm a broken record with this but Amtrak is fricking garbage.

Louisiana, for all it is know food wise, and we have steamed hotdogs, crappy nachos, and stale popcorn.

Just imagine an outfield area, for a game on Friday night, packed with people boiling crawfish, cooking jambalaya, and grilling. Let people tailgate there.

What do you expect from a train and bus company?

The old Box had parking across Nicholson, bland concessions not tied to the culture, bleachers down the lines, bad sight lines, outfield bleachers, the intimidator, and bullpens on the field.
But it had charm and people loved it.

Unbelievably this works even on flat land!!

It’s lacking character. The old Box had it. This one —- NO

Alex Box Stadium was great. The new Box is a dud…it can be fixed.
1. Add boiling suites on an outfield berm. How awesome would it be to have this setup for crawfish boils on Weekend series? They could make a killing!
2. Tighten up the foul territory to get the fans closer to the action and get chair backs all the way down.
3. Let some Ascension Baws cook Jambalaya and Pastalaya and run the concessions. Aramark Sucks.
4. Win more often.

It has sucked from day 1. Everyone has already mentioned the functional issues but what strikes me is just how aesthetically fricking ugly it is. The exposed beams are atrocious and the stucco or whatever the shite is to make it look like the rest of campus. Just gross.

Mine is that there is no comparison between the two Boxes. I walked on back in 86/87. The facilities were absolute shite back then. My first day, I had to meet with Skip in his office. His office was a temp schoolroom they had bought from some derelict elementary school they had placed outside of the locker room. You go into the building and walk straight into Skip's office. No reception area, just walk right into his offie. The locker room had maybe two working showers. No weight room. No nothing. For practice, we had about four batting cages that was shared by hitters and pitchers. The ballpark itself had maybe 800ish seats. Skip started adding on with bleachers they either borrowed from Bernie Moore or bought from high schools and such. I could go on and on.

Before Skip, it was only a 2,500 grandstand…
The Right and Left Field lines where the bleachers are, were mud…it rained that day and there were pools…
As a kid I went in 75 to the LSU - UGA game when LSU won 2-1 to win the SEC Championship…
Cokes, Popcorn and Hot Dogs, that’s it…
The place was f’n rocking…
