May have been mentioned but biggest thighs I’ve ever seen. Also always set the ball down after a touchdown, just acted like he had been there before. Loved watching him.

1985 we tied Bama 14-14 at home, Bama had a defensive end named Cornelieus Bennett. All American, All-Pro for years, Hall of Famer if I'm not mistaken.

Kept Dalton in to block him and Dalton put him on his arse all day. By the 4th quarter cat would quit if he saw Dalton in.

Dalton and James both led us down the field turning short screens into nice gains and Chris Lewis had a chip shot field goal to win the game that he missed, leading to the tie.

It's an underrated quality but amazing the difference between a RB with great vision and one without. Most people only see the athleticism, but it's the vision that really makes one great.

I watched him in the Florida game (i think that was his breakout game) way long time ago. He was absolutely stunning. best player on the field, Florida couldn't touch him and I seem to remember Fla was heavily favored. Dalton tore it up and went on to have a great career.

That fla game was awesome... it’s a shame more of the games during his career weren’t on TV....

He is on my list of all-time favorite Tigers. Shifty moves and powerful legs. I saw him occasionally on campus and wondered how he got pants to fit. He had to get oversized jeans and have waist altered to fit his legs.

Watching the first 2 mins of that video damn I remember why I miss running back screen passes. Dalton was really good at those. Please put back in our offense this year.

Dalton had the same moves Barry Sanders had, just not quite the same speed.

An all-time great.

I had flown the LSU cheerleaders to the game in Gainesville and saw him for the first time. He exploded on the highly ranked Florida Gators and ran amuck. Some Florida Bubba sitting next to me asked, "Where the hell did ya'll find him?"
I replied, "We found him in a cane field chasing rabbits. He had a whole sack full of them."
It was something to behold, they could not stop him.

I loved Hilliard. Started LSU the same year he did. But I think you might be confused about the Ronnie Lott quote. I'm almost positive that he said Walter Payton was the person he least liked tackling, and that Payton would initiate the hit, not take it. Lott talked about a game where Payton broke through the line with an opening to the goal line, but diverted just to hit Ronnie Lott before he scored.

He was one of the best running backs to suit up for LSU.

From my vantage point in the southeast corner of Tiger Stadium the kick looked good. Even Arnsparger thought the kick was good. It was only when Ronnie Lewis lowered his helmet with both hands did I realise the kick failed, and the Tigers didn't win, and likewise didn't win the SEC that year.

One of the greatest Tigers ever. Could cut on a dime and run through tackles. Tree trunks for legs and a powerful upper body for man of his stature. Single handedly destroyed UF when we played them in '82. Humble yet confident and led by example. One of my fav Tigers of all time.

To this day may favorite team.

They came within a Dana Moore FG and a Regineli sweep on a wet field for a TD, from playing for the NC. That after coming off a 2-8-1 season including a 48-7 blowout loss to Tulane.

All starters on defense went on to be drafted and played pro ball. 9 to the NFL and 2 to the USFL.

No. Dalton was not a beast mode. He preferred to juke you out of your shoes. He has surprising power when he needed it, though. As has been mentioned, people couldn't get a clean hit on him because he was so shifty. When he would lower his head and turn into a defender, it would catch them by surprise, because they were waiting for him to juke again. Between that surprise factor, his powerful legs, and low center of gravity, he would win those one on one battles and embarrass much bigger defenders.

re: Those who saw Dalton Hillard what were your thoughts?
Before Hilliard's freshman season, Gary James was the big name recruit with all the buzz.

I was working on a project making structural renovations to Tiger Stadium. While taking a break and sitting in the stands, LSU was running a simple drill with the quarterback, running back and corner. The drill was pitch the ball to the running back and get past the corner.

I believe the corner was Jeffrey Dale (I might be mistaken but it was clearly a veteran). When #21 got the ball, the corner never made the tackle. Most of the time, he couldn't put a finger on him.

I went back to the office and told everyone, James may very well be a stud, but this #21 guy is something special.#21 turned out to be Dalton Hilliard.
