I was attending LSU at the time and lived in the Gaslight 4 (lol) but it was decent and a lot of players spent their summer there. You had the higher rated Garry James then Dalton. When summer practice started and before the players moved out of the Gaslight I had several of them tell me Dalton was unreal. Better than James.
Best way I could describe his style would be his upper body would stay still and his lower body would move like a tornado.
My first really favorite player.

From my vantage point in the southeast corner of Tiger Stadium the kick looked good.
It always looked good to me too. I’ve dvr’d and rewound multiple times. That was back when CFB still used the short goal posts and the kickers used a tee so that thing went sky high. Impossible to tell for sure.

Dalton James Gang was a duo to be reckoned with. Dalton was shifty and Gary James had the speed

Best RBs since 1970?
1. Leonard Fournette
2. Charlie Alexander
3. Kevin Faulk
4. Dalton Hilliard
5. Derrius Guice
6. Harvey Williams
7. Joseph Addai
8. Jeremy Hill
9. Charles Scott
10. Lots of names could go here. (Garry James, Toefield, Hester, Robiskie, etc. and perhaps the best of them all...the incredibly disappointing Cecil Collins)
Like many have said, Garry James was the 5 star RB recruit, but once practice started, LSU's veteran players were marveling over the unheralded Hilliard. They were the best RB tandem in the nation, but it always seemed that Hilliard was the more productive back. Pro scouts thought the same as college recruiters and James was drafted higher, but Hilliard had the better pro career too.

He’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I agree about him being underrated, partially because of lack of tv exposure. He was great - really powerful but very agile. And he never got a big head and never got into trouble. One of my favorite all-time LSU players.

I was able to watch Dalton from his high school sophomore season on. My brother coached at Patterson during that time. From that time through is final days with the Saints he was simply amazing. My all time greatest tiger! I met some of his family also. Great people!

Dalton Hilliard was Barry Sanders without the breakaway speed. He could make lightning miss. He was just that quick.
Even without the speed, though, he put some impressive numbers.
I was at the game v. Florida State in 1983 where the winner would go to the Orange Bowl. Game was close at halftime, but we got the ball first in the second half. Dalton ran it something like 12 straight times to open the 3Q and ended up in the end zone. Everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball, but FSU could not stop him.
He was so good he started ahead of Garry James, who had blazing speed and was much more heralded coming out of high school.
