Are we starting to worry yet he has the yips or something in the field? 6 errors vs. 8 assists/4 PO for a .667 fielding % is rough to say the least in 9 games. He just wasnt close to this bad in the field last year. On the flip side is there anyone on the team to even really push him at SS? Cranford just made an awful play himself there last night. Definitely not suggesting we replace Thompson, as he has come around at the plate to this point it seems and we know he can play decent D at SS...just wondering whats up with all the misplays by him. 15 errors all last season (62 games) and racked up 6 already in 9 games.

It is very odd how much he has struggled in the field. I don't think he's in danger of losing his job yet. I think they're just going to let him work through it, which I don't mind.
Now if he starts booting balls in the middle of a 1 run SEC game I'm gonna be pissed.

This will be the biggest change from Maineiri to Johnson that LSU fans are going to have to live with to an extent. His teams commit errors. He is not afraid to sacrifice defense for offense. CPM was the other way around sometimes to a fault. He always had a good defensive team on the field.

He just came off of an injury that kept him from getting reps leading up to the season. So, no, I’m not surprised he isn’t sharp in the field.

But Thompson started last year at SS, we're not talking about inserting a different player here to sub offense for defense. This is more a question of what's going on with the guy who committed 15 errors in 62 games last year already committed 6 in 9 games this year. The guy is due to have like 6-7 games in a row where he doesnt commit an error at this point.

I could buy the lack of preseason reps being a reason he's started off rough there. Key will be how he plays over the next few weeks now if he can right the ship defensively.

If it doesn’t tighten up in the next week or two then it will be time to be concerned.

LOL this isn’t football of having an Air raid that puts pressure on the D. Just Bc players are attacking the ball doesn’t mean their fielding skills drop.

Thompson definitely has the yips…every time he throws to first I expect it to be off the mark

If Thompson continues to kick it around this weekend I would like to see Bianco at 3rd and Merifield at short.
Thompson is gonna be hard to get out of the line up due to his production at the plate. I am willing to sacrifice a little for offense except catcher and short.

This team has the makings of a historically bad defense.

Let’s just hope the bats really enjoy the warm weather.

I'm not saying replace him, but I think there are 3 options:

1. Cranford - his bat isn't great but he has proven to be solid defensively.

2. Doughty - played there in scrimmages but isn't really an upgrade defensively. It would open a spot for someone like Bianco or Safford at 2nd base. Not sure this would be a long term solution.

3. Bianco - when healthy, he could be a servicable SS. He is streaky offensively but has a lot of pop in his bat.

My "out of left field" option - swap Doughty and Thompson for a series or two. Give Jordan some easier defensive reps and throws at 2nd to maybe get his confidence up. This is the least likely option, just my brain running on 3 hours of sleep.

He's saying that Johnson will have players in the lineup that are good hitters, but questionable in the field over guys that are questionable at the plate but fantastic in the field.

Or shite them all clockwise one spot. Thompson to 2B, Doughty to 3B and Merrifield to SS.

Doughty got really good at 3B last year. A little less at 2B this year.

I like this option the best if Thompson doesn't figure it out. Doughty has been much better at 3B than 2B throughout his career. I think JT will be fine though.

Thompson. What point are you trying to make? I was just explaining what the other guy was trying to say.

Merrifield is still learning to play 3rd base at a D1 level. He will be fine. Doughty will also be fine at 2B. Have to remember he played 3B last season and SS a lot of the spring so he will get it figured out. Still give Thompson a few more weeks. Everyone knows he is capable to play an SEC SS. He will get it figured out.

Actually seems Merrifield and Doughty both have seemed a little more comfortable recently. Berry seems to be getting slightly more comfortable out in RF but hopefully with more reps and gametime plays in the next few weeks you will see him get more and more comfortable because he still looks a bit off out there to me.
