Covid prevented Spring ball and limited Fall practice. We desperately needed both after losing pretty much the entire team. This year much more experienced. It makes a HUGE difference.

COVID had no unique impact on LSU that wasn't experienced by all other major football programs. Stop looking for excuses.

And, of course, BLM had a strong impact on the play of our linebackers and safeties.

It has that possibility. If it sucks this year, time to clean house.

that part is true, add to that losing what, 22? players to the NFL draft, the opt outers, and the fact that a lot of our guys that got sig playing time went from playing their last hs football game to being thrown to the SEC lion's den with minimal coaching and practicing with new teammates and new schemes

Winning games on defense is no longer an option. The best defenses will get drilled week after week. 400 plus yards and 25 points if more. Just the way it is in today's game.

Brennan was very loyal to LSU but after rewatching Brennen last year he missed a lot of reads and missed wide open receivers and that was when Marshall was in game. Plus he had cement legs. Same for Finley. Now I saw Johnson make a few mistakes but I think he will be a good QB at LSU. He makes up his mind quickly and can escape and when he needs. Just as Burrows was a threat to run so is Johnson.

So, we blame roster management problems to bad luck?
Did nobody on the 2019 coaching staff notice that we were scheduled to play in the SEC in 2020?
Top staffs manage their rosters for more than the current year.
Even losing Aranda was not totally a surprise. He was not an Orgeron hire and O didn't seem to value him. He wanted to he a HC and was getting offers elsewhere.

Many factors ruined last year. Pellini was not a good dc at lsu and NU for nothing. U think he forgot to coach. Blm. Covid no spring and losing over 30 players played a factor whether u believe it or not.

I've thought about this a lot. I understand the game has changed since Pellini helped coach LSU to a NC, but there had to be more to it, than new offensive concepts. At the least, he should have been able to insert a good foundation. I have no clue the real reasons that the defense was so terrible, other than the points you mentioned. I saw a defense that didn't want to be there, and wasn't holding themselves accountable. I would loved to have been a fly on the wall in the locker room and some of the closed door meetings. Like you, I just can't see how anyone as previously successful as Pellini could have been the only reason the defense had fallen so hard. I was excited when I heard about his hire, and anyone that was around back in the mid 2000's probably would have been as well, if they're honest. Of course most of the people on here like to revise their history and pretend they knew all along that the hire was a bad idea. Who knows what really happened?

No way we go from worst to first in a year. Need to have reasonable expectations

"Reasonable" expectations are not very common. The "we will have the most talent) statement sounds like some LSU fan who lived here locally. He was a meth head, then got clean but had to run miles every day to get the same endorphin rush.

He was always proclaiming how LSU's talent was the greatest. Every position player had no equal. So, he was always bitter when LSU didn't win the NC.

There was no "buy in" last year. Pick an excuse/reason. There was a mass exodus of starters to the NFL and what was left of the team had a championship hangover. Couple that with an influx of young players coming in to step in with no real offseason or camp to get familiar with each other or the system and then some obvious coaching issues both inside the locker room and on the sidelines. No real leadership from the experienced guys or give a damn for that matter.

Having players like Chase, Shelvin and Vincent opt out, made a negative impact in the locker room and left a lack of leadership. There was youth all over the field and I think this 2021 team will better because of it.

This team is young, but riddled with talent all over the place. I expect a slow start, but to get better and better as the season goes on.

Nobody wins with defense anymore. Game has changed. The primary purpose of defense in modern college football is not to shut down the opponent, but rather to limit them to 1-2 fewer scoring drives than your team.

Also, Stingley will not win the Heisman. He won't even be invited to NY unless he has a stellar year returning punts and maybe plays a little WR, too.

Sorry man, but this is reality.

Devonta Smith abused him last year.

Stingley wasn’t guarding Smith much of the time. Inexplicable defensive coaching.

Florida had almost an entire TD drive beating Stingley.

As a freshman. And he ended up making perhaps the biggest play of the game with the pick.

I heard O said last year’s defense is way better than this year’s defense will ever be.
