The way to fix bowl games

Besides the CFP every other bowl game matchup is scheduled as a kick-off classic style, makes for one hell of an opening weekend, fans have all summer to plan the trip so likely better attendance, plus more matchup talk in the offseason about it, gives a good early season data point with games played between conferences, and best of all eliminates opt outs… seems like a win all around

bu … bu … bu… tradition?
We already have Kick-Off Classics, why not take it up a notch? I like it.

The CFP committee has made it clear that out of conference cup cake games are not a deal breaker, so I see plenty other schools starting to pass on Bowl Games.
If they want bowl games to persists, they better make if financially beneficial to the athlete. Gone are the days where the company gets all the advertising, ESPN gets all the revenue, and the athlete gets a $200 grab bag. ESPN and bowl sponsors will have to pony up cold hard cash for these kids to play in meaningless ball games.
We already have 4 teams opting out this year in favor of getting a head start on the 2026 season, expect to see more in the future, especially with the calendar as it is.

I never understood why CFB is the only level that does not have pre season scrimmages. shite even my local Jr. high had a pre season joint practice.
The more you compare D1 football to every other competitive team sport it just seems so strange.

People complained when Fournette was one of the first opt-outs, called him selfish and bad for CFB. Now, we have athletic directors forcing whole teams to opt out. I'd be pissed if I was a player, unlikely to play next level, and missing out on one final game.

This is dumb for a few reasons, but mainly because with all the roster turnover now days, you'd be rewarding a completely different team than the previous year with a bowl game while the players from the year before get screwed over.
I've seen a lot of dumb takes regarding the bowls and playoffs over the last 24 hours and this one fits right at the top with the rest of them.

I don't think players really see bowl games as a reward unless you're talking about low level schools who rarely make one.
If you reframe your perspective from a fans POV, then it creates much more exciting matchups which generates more money

Eh. Pick names from a hat for matchups.

Want to eliminate opt-outs?
Make every team which opts out of bowl game ineligible for any bowl game or playoff games the next season.

The only way to fix it is to get rid of all the shitty bowls that no one cares about (there are 36 total non-playoff bowl games) and make it actually mean something to get invited through financial incentive, extra practice, etc.
No one cares who is playing in the Rate Bowl or the Gasparilla Bowl

That’s actually a good idea.

I've been saying this for years. Move all the bowl games to the beginning of the season and let everyone go to a bowl game. Bowl games can be played all over the country, not just the south. You could even have multiple bowls in certain locations. Start on the Thursday before Labor Day and play through Monday night. The NFL starts the following weekend anyway, so there is no competition. At the end of the season, take 24 teams for the playoffs. The top 4 in each power 4 conferences and then the top two power 5 teams. The final six are at large births selected by the CFP committee. This takes the committee out of the equation in terms of the first 18 teams. They only select the order. Eliminate conference championship games, no other level of football has these. No bowl games at the end of the year. Then have approved OTA's throughout the year. Transfer portal is in January and the signing period goes back to first week of February.

Especially those players out of eligibility who won’t play at the next level. Gotta feel bad for them. Probably the ones not getting much NIL anyway

We don’t know if it’s ADs driving this or if students are involved in the process. Our outrage isn’t correctly placed without knowing.

Rick neuheisel was just talking about this. You must have been listening to the show.

You really think any conference commissioner is going to vote in favor of such a measure? You’re out of your mind

They aren’t getting a head start on the season. I believe if you aren’t in a bowl game, you don’t get extra practice time. Players will just go home after the fall semester over.

I like the idea of another 12 team playoff.
similar to the NIT, have to make it worthwhile and with some type of title.

No one is going to want to play an opponent in Week 1 especially if they are a fringe playoff team.
LSU is better off at scheduling ULM in Week 1 than playing Houston or Baylor. So teams aren't going to do that
