re: That was a bad throw by the catcher and a ticky-tack call

Different ruling for 1st base than everywhere else, in regards to within the basepath. I don't like it because you are supposed to run straight to the bag, and the way you naturally leave the batters box will have you just inside of the line.
MLB has a better rule about maintaining a straight line/path to 1st regardless of where you are as long as you're in the dirt; but I would not trust NCAA umpires with judgement calls.

Worst rule in sports
The bag is INSIDE the baseline

The solution here is simple.
Use what some kid leagues use… the double base at 1st.

The lines are part of the lane, so stepping on the line is not a violation. Also, one foot in or on the line and the other foot in the air is permitted. The batter-runner must take two consecutive steps totally outside the lane to violate the rule. If interference is called, the ball is immediately dead and the batter-runner is out; any other runners return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch (NFHS 8-4-1g, NCAA 7-11p, OBR 5.09a11).

Explained earlier, but the rule is too strict. Runner going down the line like he did should be legal. A couple of inches ain't getting out much. Runner should not have a look at his feet. Ump called it by the rule, though.
Big Ben sure is good with his in-game comments.

The lack of baseball rules knowledge on the Rant is fairly incomprehensible.
(Oh! And by the way, we benefitted from the exact same call earlier in the season.)

IT's a stupid fricking rule.
What happens if its a drop 3rd strike? The catcher will likely now be behind the batter, and thus in foul territory. The first baseman usually catches the ball in foul territory on this play. So the batter can basically run almost in the grass since that's where the second white line is to get in the way of this throw from the catcher, and that would be ok to do, but if the catcher wants to throw the ball from fair territory, then the batter can't even be an inch inside of fair territory, even though the base is inside of fair territory? Just all around stupid.
The base path should simply be the dirt. Stay inside the dirt. very simple.

There's gotta be some more leeway with that scenario. It's one thing if he ran 3 feet inside the line and the ball hits him square in the back. His left foot was MAYBE 3 inches inside.

We understand the rule. It's just a dumb arse rule in practice, if it's going to be called that strictly.

His left foot was maybe 3 inches out of bounds is the better way to think about it. He had a wide lane to stay inside, but he didn’t.

I get it. I understand that is the rule. Interpreting that rule that strictly is fricking dumb.

I haven't seen the full replay, but I'm curious if the catcher was touching the bag when he caught the force-out at home. I assume he was since they didn't say anything on the review.

It’s fricking stupid because even if he wouldn’t have been inside the line he still would’ve gotten hit.

Such a bullshite rule change. You’re literally taught to get in the line of the throw. They’re taking out all of the small things that matter and I hate it
Yup. People who don’t love baseball are making the rules. It’s horseshite.

You misread my post...if your foot is 1 cm over the chalk it is interference. My comment was that the rule should be you just need to have your foot on the chalk.

good call his foot is inside

It was a bad call - there was no intent, T actually spun outside at the end, and the ball hit him on the OUTSIDE hip.

The worst rule in baseball.
And the baseball gods know it.

That’s an easy out call every time. People are right the throw should’ve been further into fair territory but it wasn’t. If he were in the running lane the ball still would have struck him and he would’ve been safe. 2 steps before the ball struck him he was in running lane and he leaned back out to get in the way.

that was back in the 50s.
That's crazy. I literally never heard of that rule until about 10 years ago watching LSU baseball. Of course, I basically quit playing baseball in 2nd grade and we barely had a team in high school, so I'm really REALLY far from a baseball expert. But it's a stupid rule anyway, imo. Why have a basepath that you're NOT supposed to run in? If my stride length gets me to 1st at a point where my right foot is the first contact, then I have to do a more complicated (and slower) cross step to reach the bag. That's dumb. There's no reason to make a special rule for 1st base; let the defense play around the runner in fair territory just like they do in the rest of the field.
But I really don't care enough about baseball rules to worry about it other than that once every 5-10 years I see it screw an LSU runner.
